i have tried downloading climate prediction several times, boinc downloads and then nothing happens even after a reboot. The screen saver comes up saying its not working but everytime i click on the boinc icon nothing happens. It runs fine on another computer in my house which is a windows xp. (My laptop is a toshiba satellite if that helps)

I'm afraid that there isn't an easy answer to your problem, but you deserve some sort of reply.

The first question to ask may be whether BOINC is running even though it is hidden. You can do that in the processes pane of Windows Task Manager [press ctrl, Alt and Del]. Look for boinc_gui.exe in the listings. If it is there you may be able to access it - look for the BOINC icon in the Windows Taskbar (usually in the bottom right of the screen but some of the icons may be hidden, and there may be a little button with arrow you can click to show the others). If it is there, then you should be able to bring the BOINC window on the screen by right clicking on the icon and selecting show. See what the messages pane of the BOINC window says, if anything. Check the transfers and work tabs as well. If BOINC runs but it is doing nothing, then you may need to tell it to attach to the project (under settings).

I suspect, though, that you may indeed find that BOINC is simply not running at all. You say that you downloaded several times - did you try a complete uninstall (using Add/Remove programs) and then installing again after a reboot?

Look in the BOINC folder for a file called stderr.txt. You should be able to open it in notepad - if there is anything in there, copy it to this board as it may indicate the problem.

Do come back to the board with whatever you are able to tell us and some knowledgeable person will no doubt come up with the answer.

What does the screen saver say exactly? Does it error out on the screen saver? If so, it might be a problem with your graphics drivers. If that is the case, try to run it without the screensaver first, and if that works, try to update your graphics drivers.

> for http://climateprediction.net/: error -153
> 2005-02-03 15:14:17 [http://climateprediction.net/] Detaching from project -
> check for URL error"
>
> before it detaches from the project. I am puzzled as the URL is correct and
> the computer is attached to the internet and getting this URL alright!
>
When you attached to the project, did you type it in with the / at the end or is the program just putting that in the error messages? If you typed it in that way, try it without the / at the end.
