Had a power failure today. When the power was restored my cp work unit suffered an irrecoverable error. Boinc then downloaded another unit which immediately gave the same error, then the process was repeated again with the same result. My computer seemed to be running a bit slow so I checked windows task manager which showed that hadsm was happily chewing up nearly 100% of my resources. So I decided to update BOINC from version 4.05 to 4.13. When I did this I recieved several Seti work units one of which BOINC said was running. The problem was it was only ticking over 1 or 2 seconds a minute. I checked task manager & hadsm was still there so I ended task, & now the Seti unit is happily crunching away. So, my question is can I recover the hadsm unit, or if not how do I get rid of it so it won\'t slow every thing down whenever I start my computer. My computer is a Athlon 2800 running win XP sp2. Thanks in advance for any help. |

The workunit is probably gone. Restarting the computer should get rid of any extra processes that are running. <br>John Keck -- BOINCing since 2002/12/08 -- <a href="http://www.boinc.dk/index.php?page=user_statistics&project=cpdn&userid=191"><img border="0" height="80" src="http://191.cpdn.sig.boinc.dk?188"></a> |

> Are any of these safe to delete or should I just leave them? You can safely delete folders relating to failed WUs - don't delete the current model by mistake! For successfully completed models you are recommended to keep them - either move them to safe storage elsewhere on the hard disk or to CD/DVD. It's a good idea to clean up the BOINC folder partly because it makes backing up easier. The failure you had should be less likely to occur with BOINC v4.13, but a regular backup is wise. |

So are you saying that I can delete all the folders & files I listed earlier except the folder marked 03te_000029931. Again, sorry to be a pain, but I want to be sure I don't delete anything essential by mistake. |

It's sensible to be cautious. I'm surprised that you don't have a current workunit. Unless you detached from the project, or are running it off line, then BOINC should detect the absence of work from CPDN and download another WU. If it hasn't, and there is nothing in the work or transfers tabs, then you will probably need to reset (right click on CPDN in the projects tab). It is very possible that the client has been trying to download more WUs and these are immediately failing, though, so look in your BOINC messages window, and in the stderr.txt file of the BOINC folder for recent messages. There is a daily download limit of 4 WUs, so if you reached that after the initial failure, BOINC would not have been able to get more until the next day (UK time). As for the existing folders, then yes, the one for the run that completed is the one to keep safe in case you or the project want to look at it sometime. Other ones are not of any value. |
