Marj: Carolyn's Clinic is not currently set up on Climate Prediction, however, the Half-way House for former clinic inhabitants, The Final Front Ear does have a Chapter with CP, which can be accessed <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/team_display.php?teamid=90">here</a>.

If you feel the need for the Clinic, TFFE is the best I can suggest... And I'm not only a spokes-person, I'm also a member =-)

Jealousy is a terrible thing. My faithful companion 'Rover' (a pseudonym to spare his blushes) has learned somehow of my sudden, unexpected infatuation with SPIT and has spent the day alternating between sulking and growling. Even now his eyes glint with a desperate look and he growls as I type (I fear his old memories of the school of hard knocks from where I rescued him have returned). I have offered him bright new cobblestones but he is not impressed. Dark days ahead.........

Rover has had a bad night. His sleep was constantly perturbed by wild fanciful dreams. I heard him muttering garbled phrases such as 'empirically adjusted albedo variations' and 'white hot spots on the cold equator precipitating over the sea ice temperature scale'. At one point he merely twitched and whimpered 'Carl....Carl....' then later awoke with a wolf-like howl of pleading anguish which sounded like 'Toluuuuu......'. He pads around now with bags under his eyes muttering only 'credit where credit's due'. I have promised him a new doggy WOWbowl and a 'freeze or fry' dog bed and shall find the time today to make him a play globe with the help of CPview.

Hi all,

The main site should be back up and running. We rolled back to the most recent backup and started again from there. At present the phpBB boards are down, and we are looking at starting them up again in a few days. We need to talk to the Open University (who host the site) first. We think the phpBB boards are a very useful resource (and seem popular with a lot of our participants) so at this stage we intend to continue supporting them, providing their security can be assured (to a reasonable standard).

The story was that a malicious hacker managed to find a phpBB exploit which brought down the server and cause quite a bit of damage within the Open University. As far as we know this was a random attack. The Open University have been installing additional software on all their machines to check for vulnerabilities, as well as carrying out a general security audit.

We will be meeting with OU representatives to discuss the situation so that we can all try to learn from it (beyond the obvious "keep your software patched"), and we'll be asking all our participating institutions to think about their vulnerabilties and how to address them.

Personally, I'm glad (1) the majority of the useful information on the site is recoverable and (2) that this didn't occur at a particularly busy time for us.

Well, the international pages are damaged:
All the accented letters (é,è,à,ù,etc) have been replaced by chinese letters under IE6 and by ? signs under Firefox.
Several translated pages have been lost in french (especially the science pages)
Can you check this when you have a little spare time ? (well I know you don't have much :o) )

Thanks for the clarification Dave. I'm glad it doesn't seem to have done any real damage (to us anyway). I'm also glad the phpBB will survive, but at the end of the day the project is the most important thing and we're all still crunching!

Hi all,

Ever since the website problems I have had a few problems with my boinc cpdn. When starting BOINC the cpdn units seem to start ok in the 'messages' tab 'Resuming computation' etc, but in the 'Work' tab the progress is at 0.00%, and the units are not running. If I reboot then sometimes one or both my current units start (they're both around 40% complete), sometimes not. Have tried an 'update' in the projects tab but that didn't help.
Is this a related problem - or something else? Sorry if this isn't the place to post this.
