Message 6598 - Posted: 6 Dec 2004, 12:04:05 UTC - in response to Message 6593.

Hi!

I have finished my dataset (100%) and I have been trying desperately over my past few days to upload to BOINC. I get the following error:

"Cannot resolve hostname: www.climateprediction.net (valid name, no data record of requested type)."

What to do? Theoretically, if I cannot update within the next 6 days, my data set will be lost (by then, 2 weeks will have passed since the last update), and 3 months of computational work would be ruined!

Can somebody please help me and tell me what's going on?

> Hi,
>
> Unfortunately, we're having some problems with the community space and website
> server. The BOINC server seems to be unaffected.
> We hope to fix the webserver soon. Thanks for your patience.
>
> Neil

Thanks Neil, I hope you get it fixed. I can confirm the BOINC server is not affected.

"In theory", the main site should be back up tomorrow.

Hi there,

as for uploading results, you might get lucky sending them to climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc instead of regular www.climateprediction.net (the same apply for attaching to the project etc.).

First, i would backup whole BOINC folder.
You may want to try editing account_climateprediction.net.xml and replace second line where is located.
Be warned - this is only desperate idea which hasn't been tested.

Thanks for the info. I shall wait until tomorrow, and if the server is not on-line by then, I shall try to do what you suggested.

Regards,
Steve.

Hi everybody. I know about the server problem, but noticed what Steve said, that if he can not 'update' (do you mean trickle, Steve?) within 2 weeks of the last time, his whole model will be lost.

What does this mean? I know American holidays are particularly short, but in Europe we expect to be able to go away for more than 2 weeks at a time. Have I totally misunderstood something?

Hi Mo,

i'm sure that is it that critical.
- 2 weeks period is considered as machine active status for statistics. It is known that under classic, one might download model, complete it whole off-ilne (no trickles) and then upload.
- once model is finished, it will stay on Transfer; i'm not aware that it will fade-away after some peorid
- one can upload model until it's deadline - which is propably fare more then December 2004.

Well, a bit of speculation i must admit (haven't been profeed} but still what common sense might suggests...

Hi!

Well, I haven´t actually tested it, Mo, but they say that if you don't trickle for 14 days, they assume that your computer is no longer working on the data set.

Regarding the vacation period, I totally agree. I'm not currently at home (I'm actually in Germany right now) and I'm gonna stay here for over a month. Luckily I have my laptop with me, and of course it's running BOINC, but I have been having a hard time finding Internet access points for sending trickles (I'm located in a very small town). And it's indeed very stressful to know that you have to find a way to trickle at least once in every two weeks.

So, if there is any project administrator reading my message, I suggest that they increase the period to at least 1 month, so that even guys travelling or on vacation don't have problems with trickling.

Best regards,
Steve.

Hi Steve,

the 14days period is no so stressfull is it might seem - if you don't trickle do 2 weeks, machine is not counted in 'Total Active machines' statistic.
It takes longer before particular model/WU is resent to another machine...

Hi, Honza!

Ok, now I get it. My apologies. My only suggestion is, as Mo has also asked the same question, that the FAQ section should be updated with a paragraph that clarifies this issue, such that new users can rest assured that if they go on vacation their data set is not lost.

Again, thanks for all your help.

Btw. I've update the XML configs as you said and my data set has uploaded without any errors. I will use the new URL from now on. 10x again!

Best wishes,
Steve.

Honza
I just tried editing Account...etc file, after b/u of entire directory &
also separate b/u of account.... file.
It created a new project folder,(same name as new url), gave lots of error
messages and tried to dialup to get new wu.
Stopped it. Replaced account....file with original. More error messages and another attempt to dialup.
Stopped it again, this time moved entire BOINC folder to a temp folder,
copied back original BOINC b/u to programs folder and did another reboot.
This time it was all back to normal.

Now I'm going to go and paint something, then sit down and watch the paint dry.
If I get bored with that I'll go and watch the weeds grow.
The servers will be up some day.

I like the description of the new PHPBB version on the PHPBB site:

'We have now released phpBB 2.0.11, the "damn, it's cold and my fur won't grow back" edition.'

They must have heard about our 'Fast Iceball' and 'Cold Equator' models!

Les

I'm still not able to get access to the "old" CPDN Community Space. My bookmarked URL fails and I get redirected to the main site. ok.

When I go there, I see a title "Discussion Group for Participants"... clicking that link give me a 404 error. Tried clearing cache etc. but the error persists.

I appreciate you guys have had major problems, but a brief explanation of the status would be helpful.

I'm also looking forward to see classic forum on-line...just can't get myself using BOINC forum with it's many missing features (:-

Thanks Honza,

Another thread to follow. This attack seems to have really disrupted the OU systems setup.

Hi everybody

The main page is now visible, but I think it is an outdated version. Shouldn't Marj still be there as UOTW? Still no forum.
