I upgraded 'Alison' (AMD Athlon, WinXP Home) and 'Caroline Nova' (Dual Intel Xeon, WinXP Pro) to BOINC v4.19 from BOINC v4.13 yesterday without any difficulty and all their models are still running okay. :-) <a href="http://www.nmvs.dsl.pipex.com/"><img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/cpdn/stats.php?userID=6&team=off&trans=off"></a> <a href="http://www.nmvs.dsl.pipex.com/">Distributed Mania</a> |

"AuthenticAMD Unknown CPU Typ" instead of "Unknown CPU Type Pentium" which is a definite improvement but not quite there as yet. To be fair even the BIOS of my desktop boards doesn't recognise XP-M CPUs, CPU-Z v1.26 manages to read it correctly somewhere though; "Processor Name: AMD Athlon XP-M" (Although that may be a 'cheat' conversion from "unknown CPU typ", I dunno. ) <a href="http://www.nmvs.dsl.pipex.com/"><img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/cpdn/stats.php?userID=6&team=off&trans=off"></a> <a href="http://www.nmvs.dsl.pipex.com/">Distributed Mania</a> |

I upgraded from Boinc 4.13 to 4.19 a couple of days ago. No problems at all, with the current model still crunching as normal - Athlon XP 2800+, Win2K Pro SP4. Also no problems on another machine - Athlon64 3500+, WinXP Home SP2, crunching PP@H and S@H. I note that CC4.19 is now the standard download at PP@H and S@H, while LHC@H state that it will be their download when they get going again (I have my fingers crossed for next week). E@H are, of course already on 4.19, since I understand that they were the main instigators for the recent updates. All 8 machines (14 models running.) are now upgraded to v4.19 without any significant problems. (I do wish they'd clean up the directory structure a bit though - all those extra language folders are plain irritating; 'projects' and 'slots' are the only two sub-directories <i>required</i> for BOINC to run.) <a href="http://www.nmvs.dsl.pipex.com/"><img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/cpdn/stats.php?userID=6&team=off&trans=off"></a> <a href="http://www.nmvs.dsl.pipex.com/">Distributed Mania</a> |

Agree - BOINC 4.62 seems to be better in terms of directory structure. Or at least - there should be an option is additional languages should be installed. |

I do wish that I could say all is great with 4.19, but I'm getting stalled apps here on my Linux box. That requires a kill/restart to fix. Ick. |

Should I upgrade from version 4.16 or should I back-up my BOINC directory first? I don't want to loose an WU that has 60% completion. |

> Agree - BOINC 4.62 seems to be better in terms of directory structure. FYI A prerequisite to installing the later versions (4.5x & 4.6x) is an uninstall of the older client. The uninstall removes the language folders. |

I upgraded to 4.19 yesterday (after uploading my model) and it seems fine so far. No problems (touch wood) Win2k sp4 _________________________________ |

Whatever you do <b>DO NOT</b> downgrade to 4.13 after running 4.19 - you're guaranteed to lose all your workunits! I managed to do it accidentally last night by forgetting to update my BOINC service to run 4.19. I'd dutifully taken backups and run 4.19 boinc_gui to check that the upgrade was fine, and as it was I deleted my backup before starting the service  The problem is down to a change in the format of the <b>client_state.xml</b> file. The <b><command_line></b> element in <b><workunit></b> sections is split over multiple lines in 4.19, and 4.13 generates the following unrecoverable error for each result: <b>The system cannot find the file specified. (0x02) - exit code 2 (0x2)</b> I've just tested on an off-line system, and there's no problem with downgrading if I join the <b><command_line></b> elements into a single line. No problem if you're only running one machine but more than a little irritating when you're updating a 'farm'... <a href="http://www.nmvs.dsl.pipex.com/"><img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/cpdn/stats.php?userID=6&team=off&trans=off"></a> <a href="http://www.nmvs.dsl.pipex.com/">Distributed Mania</a> |

 grumble, grumble, if I sold this lot down the river I could <i>afford</i> a flashy sports car... ;-) <a href="http://www.nmvs.dsl.pipex.com/"><img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/cpdn/stats.php?userID=6&team=off&trans=off"></a> <a href="http://www.nmvs.dsl.pipex.com/">Distributed Mania</a> |

Well, 4.19 has been out for several weeks, now. Is the consensus good? Does it not just run, but run stably, & upload well, too? M$ released thier monthly patches Tuesday, so I'm planning to do my monthly maintainence this weekend, & figured I might upgrade from 4.13 to 4.19, if all is well w/4.19. Currently, though, 4.13 seems to be doing quite well for me . Six machines is a lot of work to undue; And 12 models is a lot of lost work to replace, if 4.19 is a dud! So Yea or Nay??? Strat |

I updated with no problems (suspend then exit then install), though I had made a backup just in case (after stopping the model). Just completed the model that was running at the time. No problems. Forum search Site search |

Crunch Crunch If you only run CPDN, and got no problem, then you might want to wait until they release the 4.2x series, wich has a completly redesigned structure and GUI (wich works in windows, linux and mac) based on the development branch 4.5x. As I don't have dial-up, I dont know if they resolved the bug. PS: The BOINC team is expecting to release the new 4.2x in March, if they don't find too many bugs. That's when they are thinking of killing SETI classic. Professor Desty Nova Researching Karma the Hard Way |
