I searched the forums and did not see this answer anywhere so I thought I would ask. Is there any documentation for installing more than one instance of BOINC on a single multi processor machine? On an 8way box I use about 1.5-2 cpu's and the rest are lying idle.

Thanks,
Ron

Welcome to the project, Ron.

You've got an impressive looking set of computers there :)

You only have to install one instance of BOINC on a computer. It'll control the number of science applications that get run on your CPUs, so I guess what you're asking is how to get more models running on your quad CPU systems.

You'll need to modify your general preferences to increase the maximum number of CPUs that BOINC is allowed to use (the default is 2). Bear in mind that each CPDN model is going to require 700MB of disk space and 60MB of RAM, so you may also have to tweak the settings for those too.

Thank you for the response Thyme,

That did the trick. The machine is a quad physical that has HT turned on, so the OS sees 8. I will probably add a couple more of these today or tomorrow and see if I can get all the kinks out and from there, see if I can be my own team! ;)

Here is something that I think is interesting from a computer performance view. Some of the machines listed for me are actually virtual machines running on a quad xeon. Although they did not return as many credits as the dedicated boxes did per VM instance, however if taken into account that all of the VM's are running on a single box, then that box alone spanked other quad xeons running a dedicated host OS. I think I am going to create some more VM's and see if I can actually max the physical box out. VMware is neat!

And while I am at it, at home I am putting together two AMD 939 machines and one dual AMD 940 which I need to burn in anyways so running cp.net sounds like a good way to do it. Based on what I have read so far, the AMD Opteron box should avg. as much as, but probably more than my fastest xeon box.

Cheers,
Ron

The compiler used for CPDN is from Intel, and the app is heavily Intel optimized. The ability to use HT on Intel also increases CPDN throughput for any PC that uses it to run more models. You can check out the host stats at:

http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/top_hosts.php

to see where the opterons and A64s fall in the list. In the old CPDN, A64s ruled by far. In the BOINC CPDN with the Intel compiler, they are somewhat hobbled. They need to upgrade the Intel compiler to the latest version which doesn't penalize A64s, but I don't know when that will happen.
