Latest announcements I can find.

January 28, 2005
We have turned on db_purge in preparation for the DB migration to the new hardware. This will reduce the size of the DB and so the migration will go faster. The validator will probably fall even more behind in the meantime. The migration will occur early next week. We will post the time once we have pinned it down.

Stages of the transition
We don't have an exact timetable yet, but the transition will be staged as follows:

1. We will make a snapshot of SETI@home user information (accounts, teams, profiles) and will use it to initialize the SETI@home/BOINC database. We will then launch the SETI@home/BOINC project.

2. Over the next month or so we will send email to all SETI@home users, giving them their new account IDs and recommending that they switch to BOINC. During this period you can continue to run the current SETI@home, and your results will be recorded and used. New SETI@home accounts and team changes can be made, but will not be carried over to BOINC.

3. Once SETI@home/BOINC is stable, and versions are available for most platforms, we will turn off the data server for SETI@home Classic. At this point you will need to switch to SETI@home/BOINC.

Wow, this is something.
BOINC platform will have another bunch of computers starving for WUs.
Classic SETI already had gained immortal reputation among DC projects.

Good luck with transition, classic SETI.

I fail to see the need for this post. Please indicate the name and number of starving computers...

With 5 BOINC projects online, well almost and at least 1 other that is in Beta, we will never starve....

Ok, starving wasn't a good choice. Perhaps desirous, eager...my English is limited. I'm sure those new BOINC machines will get their work...
There was a time not long ago, when only CPDN and sometimes SETI was on-line. Now, Einstein is up, LHC will be hopefuly soon too.

Nice avatar, btw. I assume there is somethnig interesting on your t-shirt but i'm unable to read the text...

Do you have a link to the second report? I see the first one on the SETI-BOINC site, the latter looks like one that was posted last spring when the BOINC version was just starting up. Nothing on the Classic site about shutting down imminently.

(crunching for SETI@Home since 28 June 1999)
BOINC Wiki Thanks to Paul D. Buck and associates

The second one was posted by Matt Lebofsky on the Seti classic message board on Jan 12 2005. This is the link:

EDIT: sorry, just noticed this is another one, but the information is roughly the same. :-)

Thanks for the link anyway - still relevant.
Regardless of "force to upgrade" or "required to upgrade", I have seen question whether SETI/Classic users will be asked to upgrade to SETI/BOINC or BOINC in general. I know that SETI/classic database shouldn't be used for creating BOINC accounts on non-SETI projects and it makes perfect sense. Activating them SETI/BOINC is a good step to make transitions as easy as possible.
Anybody got the SETI turnoff/transition e-mail text or at least answer whether asked to upgrade to SETI/BOINC or BOINC in general?
Just curious...
