I have a Pentium3 750mhz computer and the BOINC client is reporting that my current work unit will be completed in roughly 2500 hours (about 100 days of 100% cpu usage). My deadline is sometime in 2006. Is this normal or did i get some weird work unit. It will be quite a feat if I manage to finish one work unit :)

Yes its normal. Until a few years ago global climate models could only be run on super-computers.

While I hate to say it, your computer is probably not fast enough to be useful for cpdn unless you usually run it 24/7. Perhaps you should run one of the other less CPU intensive BOINC projects and come back to cpdn when you have upgraded your computer. Having said that you could persevere, but there is a possibility that something will go wrong with your computer before the end, take regular backups of your "program files\boinc" directory.

I read somewhere else in this fora, that even just one or two phases (each 1/3 of the whole) could be useful. And you 'trickle' 72 times before the completion. That's roughly every 40h CPU-time with you per trickle, or 975h per phase. So you will get some credits for your efforts, and even some useful data for the science.

Mine says somewhere in the ball park of 700 hours till completion I have about 20 hours in so far. It says its running just under 4 s/ts. DO you think my computer will finish in time?

Obviously, the finishing date depends a lot on whether you run the project all the time. But that speed is about right for a 3GHz P4 running in HT mode. The project team realise that some people will take a very long time to complete the work, and so there is no need to worry about deadlines.

720 hrs is 30 days til completion, if running continuously 24/7. Probably 4 sec/ts is about the average of all users running CPDN.

A computer is not useless as long as it can produce a trickle at least once every 96 hours.

Thanks guys, I was just wondering if I was in a realistic ballpark, and it looks like I am. If I even do half of running 24/7 thats still a realistic time period. I'm finding being part of this project very exciting and interesting.

Well, my P3-750 is probably on maybe 12 hours out of the day, so in theory I'll finish one unit completely in about 7 months. I started the client on my P4-2.8ghz and it's reporting about 700 hours until completion so this one should be feasible. My previous project that I've been donating my CPU time to was SETI@HOME, but after 5 years now I'd say it's time to try something else.

I've never tried anything like this before, Im finding it interesting if not adicting, Im constantly checking my progress, I know its not a race ;). My computer is a Fujitsu P4 3g/hz / 1 gig of Ram. Its running 2 WU's, still under 5% on both of them. I wonder if I give my computer a pep talk if it will go faster. Would it go faster you think if I set in preferences on the Climatepridiction site to 1 processor instead of 2. Or doesnt it make a difference?

It is fun isn't it... If you can turn HT off in the BIOS, and change your preferences to only run one model, it will complete faster. However, you get more done in a given period of time running two under HT. There's about a 15% increase in throughput running two models under HT as opposed to running one model with HT turned off.

Running one model with HT on will only use 50% of your CPU and go no faster than you are now on a given model.

On my P4 3.4 GHz with HT off, running one model took about 12.5 days, so two models took about 25 days. Running two models under HT, they complete in about 22 days.

Keeping the graphics globe picture turned off when you're not actually watching it speeds the model up a lot.

In running on Windows use the task manager to check that there are no processes using a significant amount of CPU when your computer should be idle, and if there are investigate why, close down unwanted applications. Finally close down the task manager, it takes up a significant amount of CPU power, and slows models on my machine by about 5% (although it claims it is taking under 1% CPU).

Im not as computer literate as some of you guys, but I was looking at the Processes in the Window Task Manager, and I saw something called System Idle Process constantly taking up 65-70 on the CPU, what exactly is this, I know it may really be a dumb question.

Thats the process that runs when there is nothing else to do. Make it go away, run ClimatePrediction.net! If you are running cpdn, then it should be almost 100% when the computer is doing nothing else, if you have a hyerthreaded P4 then you will need to run two models simulataneously.

Right now in task manager it shows my two WU's at 17% a piece and system Idle process at 64%? Is this normal? Or does it just depend on how Ive set up my prefernces on Climateprediction.net? The only other item that shows taking any of my CPU is my internet, which is at like 1%. And of course task manager when open takes between 1-3%. When you say make it go away, how do you mean exactly?
