NB The following explanation from the SETI boards

<i>v4.20 is v4.66 + latest bug-fixes, and is the latest alpha-build.

v4.2x is the release-branch, and should now only get bug-fixes till the next public release-version is out, this is planned to happen within a fortnight, but as always some unforseen bugs can delay things...

Till v4.2x finished alpha-testing, as always you can try it out but don't complain if there's a new build every day or something...

Since they needs the version-numbers, they're also resetting the development-branch back to v4.50. As always, this branch will get new features, but no new build should be released before v4.2x is out.</i>

Note also the reinforcing comment by a user:

<i>4.20 is developmental build and is risky to run. It's not a general release. It can cause puter problems. Don't install unless you're willing to risk loss of computer OS and/or Hardware. Don't ask me where to get it. It might do bad things to your puter if you use it. Have I made enough of a disclaimer?</i>

In view of the comments by others on the need to do a fresh install before upgrading to this version, we will also need clear upgrade advice.

Could I make the obvious point that anyone posting to these boards who is using an alpha or beta version of BOINC should make that clear when doing so! Otherwise comments along the lines of 'it won't work' may invite an unsympathetic reply.

I'd also like to strongly suggest that all users backup there BOINC folder before ANY upgrade of the client software- stable or beta! Although this has been said many times before, the one time I didn't backup before switching to 4.19, lost me 2x weeks of CPDN models... (Insert  here)...

4.20 is <b>NOT</b> the next step after 4.19, as the numbers might suggest, it's the next of the development strand (4.6x).
You need to <b>uninstall</b> 4.19 first, and install 4.20 afterwards.

I asked this over at Seti, were all the Boinc people tend to be more often, and most of Andrews quotes were from their answers.
Unfortunately i cannot put the link here ATM, as the Seti-Servers are down again :-(

<b>Edit: Next Morning:</b>
Seti's up again and got a new server. Wow, it's quick!
So <a href="http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=11457">here</a>'s the link!
<b>/Edit</b>

Nevertheless:
<b>It's development stuff, use at own risk!</b>
Or, as on TV: Don't try this at home ;-)
