When running BOINC with climate prediction the core causes the whole system to freeze after 1 or 2 minutes. Only a reboot helps. I'd like to participate at this project but if the system crashes after a short time this makes no sense. So, what can I do? What I've did so far: I have tried to reinstall the BOINC-Client. No change in behavior. Then I've atteched to SETI and Folding Project which had run without any problems (This means my machine is ok, the BOINC client too) My machine : Athlon TBread, Windows XP SP2 I have participated at distributed computing since some years. I _know_ my system is stable. There is no doubt for me: the computing core for CP causes the freezes. Can you help with this kind regards poldi PS: this forum _needs_ a searchengine ... |

You seem very certain that your system is stable and that the CP core is at fault. If so, how are 30,000+ machines crunching it? Not all programs stress a computer to the same extent. The nature of the CP task is very intensive and stresses processors more than almost anything you are likely to run with the exception of programs that are deliberately designed to stress the processor and test for errors. Having said that, it does appear that there are some processors that just don't like the CP core. Some people have reverted to the classic non boinc client (available from the open Uni. course pages). There is a 'Keyword search' on the page: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_help_desk.php But I agree that this search facility is not very good. I would read this thread about the difficulties CPDN pose for people who have had success at other DC projects and think their computers are completely stable because of it. CPDN stresses the CPU and memory more than just about any DC project out there. Also, there is a search function, it is just not very well placed. If you go to http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_index.php or http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_help_desk.php and click on the keyword search link, it will give you the opportunity to search the message boards or questions and problems boards either through title searches or message searches. Note that after you type in your search term, do NOT hit Enter, click on the Search button. The Enter key does not always work. The search box at the top of the web pages on all web pages is for searching the site, not for searching the forums. |

Check system temperature. Do you overclock? If so, then you will have problems. If you reckon it might be heat related, then add a chassis fan. My Athlon XP 1900+ does work for CPDN. This half-tower system has two entry fans at the front of the case drawing air in over the two HDDs, one exhaust in the side panel, and two more exhausts on the rear. On top of this there is a card fan mounted underneath the graphics card sucking out hot air from that region and a dual fan PSU at the rear. The heatsink on this chip is one rated for a 3000+. (Same socket design) This runs CPDN, LHC & S@H at full load 24/7.
Max CPU temperature -> 54C Usual CPU temp. -> 47C - 51C HDD temperature -> 27C - 30C Case temperature -> 30C
If the CPU elevates above 53C odd, I just turn up the two pots controlling the exhausts at the rear. Hope this helps. |

I am very certain that my system _is_ stable under all condtions except CPDN :) It seems like many peoples systems have problems with overheating while running CPDN. I am shure that CPU and chipset do not overheat. The CPU keeps below 38°C also with CPDN. The chipset does not exeed 30 °C. Maybe the RAM becomes too hot. I will check that. Thank for your help. poldi |

I have run Prime95, MemoryChecker and other distributed projects with no problem. I heard it might be a problem with the AMD's and the CPDN client is optimised for Intel. |

I've had a couple of aborted WUs, but nothing like the total freezes Poldi is describing. |

There was someone suggesting that this optimisation might be the cause of the problems. |

Gareth, I haven't heard of the Intel optimisation causing lockups. If it IS, then the computer is on the borderline of unstable anyway. Poldi, For another person's problems, similar but not quite the same, read this, especially his final answer. Here Les |
