as your puter looks similar to mine, at least at the benchmarks, I think one WU will take about 1200 hours to crunch.

Hi everybody!

The google article is a nightmare.

The present perfect is eg I HAVE TRIED TO WORK IT OUT, WE HAVE GOOGLED, YOU HAVE GIVEN UP THE STRUGGLE TO UNDERSTAND. The action is perfect = complete/finished/past, but also present in the sense that the action happened during the present time period.

The simple perfect, or simple past is eg I TRIED TO WORK IT OUT THIS AFTERNOON, WE GOOGLED IT YESTERDAY BUT FINALLY GAVE UP THE STRUGGLE. The verb is simple in the sense of just 1 word (TRIED GOOGLED GAVE) and perfect because the action is complete/finished/past. The action was completed before the present time period.

So students of English have to learn their irregular verbs in 3 parts eg go (present/infinitive), went (simple perfect/past), gone (present perfect). Or sing sang sung, - bring brought brought - write wrote written. From these 3 forms you can almost always derive/work out every other tense and verb form.

Here in Portsmouth UK common dialectal variants are write, writ, writ and bring, brang, brung.

A complication is that I have described UK usage of the tenses, which I don't think varies between dialects. But in American usage, the simple past is often used for actions just completed in the present time period.

So, where in England you say I HAVE JUST FOUND MY KEYS , Americans can also say I JUST FOUND MY KEYS.

Maybe some Canadians and Australians can add what they would say in the KEYS example.

Mo, you're absolutely right, re: The UK - American dialects.

I worked w/several Brits a few years ago, and the differences in our use of the English language bordered on startling, to say the least!!! When thier conversations were amongst themselves, and they were speaking "fast &amp; furious", I missed around 20% of thier conversation! It's clear to me us Yanks speak "Amercanese", which varies greatly by region, and sometimes even by neighborhoods w/i the same city!

Guess ol' Winston had the definitive statement on this... ;-)
