Do you all have an executable compiled specifically for the Mac G5? It seems we could get a lot more bang out of this if we did. In theory it should just need to be recompiled with a G5 target. Many thanks! |

Team MacNN has a G5 optimized client at: http://members.dslextreme.com/~readerforum/forum_team/boinc.html |

The only thing you get there is a G5 optimized boinc client, which doesn't speed up your model at all, since boinc's job is to download model data and appropriate model software for your platform, upload the results and do some other things that have no influence on how fast your computer will be crunching your work units. The actual computations are all performed by the model software (hadsm3), not by boinc itself. What you want is a G5 optimized hadsm3 version and I don't know if that's available. Could someone from Oxford answer that? From my own experience, especially math intensive applications can profit dramatically from a recompile with enabled G5 optimizations, therefore it would definitely make sense to do that with hadsm3, too. |

Christian, Thanks for the info. It is what I suspected. I sent a query off to tech support. hopefully they will come up with something. I am sure that I am not the first person with this question! OK, Surely SOMEONE out there has access to a Fortran compiler with G5 additions. Can we get this done? Thanks, Malcolm > > In theory it should just need to be recompiled with a G5 target. > > Theory is a wonderful thing. And free. > However a fortran compiler for G5 is NOT free. By the way: there are several free fortran compilers for Power(PC). One of them is http://g95.sourceforge.net/ Greetings, Chris |

The CPDN dev team are working on getting the Sulphur Cycle model up and running. And Mac's are not the only recent computers that people want to use. There are also AMD and Intel 64 bit machines, Solaris, and several others. The programming started about 2002, so they went for what was readily available then. I'm afraid that you will have to run the project as you find it. Someday we will ALL be running Cray YMPs, or the equivalent. :) Les |

Alby: What you are seeing is the ASCII representation of a binary coded file. Hold down the Option Key on your Mac when you click on the <a href="http://members.dslextreme.com/~readerforum/forum_team/boinc.html">download link</a> and it will download the file instead of trying to open it. I think that you will find that these are for BOINC. hadsm is a different kettle of fish. It is NOT open source, and only Oxford uni has a license to work on the code. Read the license agreement for info on this. Les |
