Hi everyone, I've just started my very first run of climateprediction.net (Bionic version), and have the following question: Why is my estimated total time to complete the project constantly increasing? Is this normal? 1. when i've just started to run this program, the estimated total hours to complete my assigned project is: ==>estimated 511 minutes total to complete 2. now, 33 hours of CPU time/numbercrunching, the estimated total hours to complete my assigned project is: ==>estimated 620 minutes total to complete (ie: 33 hours CPU time computerd + 587 hours estimated time left. |

> Why is my estimated total time to complete the project constantly increasing? > Is this normal? Hello wang nala, welcome at CPDN. Yes, it is normal. Mine changed from initial 850 (if I remember correct) to about 1200 and is down again to 930. It's not that easy to calculate based on your benchmarks how long it will take your puter to crunch this specific WU. BTW: Same happens with Seti and Predictor at my puter. Seti starts with 4:40 for the cached WU, after starting it's most of the time down to something like 1h, and will finish usually at about 3:20. Grüße vom Sänger |

Hi wang nala, Welcome to the CPDN board. The estimate of time to completion is recalculated by BOINC every model timestep. It works out your average time per model timestep so far and uses that to guess how long you are going to take to finish all three phases of a model (each phase is 259248 model time steps, or just over 15 model years). The computer time to needed to calculate each model time step varies from step to step, and the average may change up or down over a long period. Your computer seems to having been running rather faster than I would have expected from its specification when it started the model. So I wouldn't be worried if it starts slowing down a little. The time to completion of 600 to 700 hours would be typical for your computer. The CPDN work units are big - it takes a lot work to calculate the weather.... many thanks for everyone's reply! i'll definitely finish my assigned CPDN project before i do a (scheduled) complete reinstall Windows on my computer. however, after i report my finished results, is there any way to *Prevent* CPDN from assigning a second project to me for now (due to reinstall computer). don't want to jeopardize your project at CPDN.... b.rgds mr. wong hong kong |

That should do it. But it would also affect other PCs running BOINC as well, if you have more than 1. |

In a few weeks, I'll be finishing my first every climateprediction.net (Bionic version), and then i'll erase my hard drive and do a complete clean install of Win'XP-Pro SP2. I don't want to jeopardize ClimatePrediction.net by accidentally downloading this 2nd assignment, when i know i will be erasing my hard drive of everything. b.rgds Mr. Wong Hong Kong |

Take simply a copy of the complete BOINC Folder to CD or any removable drive, then reinstall your system with clean win xp2 then recopy the saved copy of complete BOINC project to your clean system. That should work, since it functioned with me so far on each computer. Ciao, Tom |

Only thing I'd add is that if you use CD you'll need to remove the read-only property on everything you restore before you start BOINC. Just finished & successfully uploaded my very first finished CP project. With the CP Preferences set in advance to very high (not possible) free disk space levels, Bionic v4.19 simply said "No Work Available" and did not upload a new project. Now i can reinstall my Win'XP and come back after this for more! Thanks to everyone for their tips! |
