I'm using BOINC currently for three projects (SETI, CPDN and Einstein, LHC is on hold), but not using it as my screensaver. Every time I want to see the CPDN graphics (right-click, show graphics) the application reports an error and kills the WU. This doesn't happen for the other projects- only CPDN.

System info:
Win2K, SP4, 20GB HD, 256MB RAM
Intel PIII (Compaq laptop)
BOINC 4.19, hadsm3 4.04

Ideas anyone?

Lior.

What type of video chipset is in the laptop? You may want to download the latest video card drivers from your laptop manufacturer's website, if you haven't already.

The machine is an Ancient Compaq laptop, with ATI Rage Mobility chipset. I have the latest driver available from Compaq, and ATI say they recommend using the supllier's driver.

If your laptop is as up to date as you can get it, you may well have to do without graphics.

The CPDN graphics aren't all that exciting, just a reddish brown circle with some outlines, and red / orange /
yellow blotches that change as the calcs are done. And it uses up cpu time; possibly a LOT of it in the
case of your machine.

The main thing is crunching the model. And when you are 1 trickle past 1/3rd, and 2/rds, you should be able
to see the temp and rain graphs without a problem.

Being a port to desktops from a supercomputer program, it was meant to run on fairly modern computers.

Thanks, Les.

I've sort of given up on the graphics by now- I'll settle for my rommmate's screen saver- he's running CPDN all the time.

The main thing, as you said, is crunching. It was just a bit sad that the graphics caused WU's to fail and work to be lost.

You could download CPView from
<a href="http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~sykesm/cpdn.html">Matin Sykes site</a>

I always only use this on a backup copy of runs. If this crashes while looking at a backup then it is unlikely to crash your model.

There will also be an official IDL visualisation package shortly (hopefully).
