Some of the news reports for this story say it was a joint US/UK research effort and they had two models (one American one British) which modelled the observed temperatures and salinity extremely precisely. According to the Scripps <a href="http://scrippsnews.ucsd.edu/article_detail.cfm?article_num=666">news release</a> they used the HadCM3 model.
