I created a new team named Modern Travel Services. This is the name of a travel agency I own. It is intended for people that have an interest in all things travel related.

I've also decided to entice people to join my team by offering some discounted travel from my travel agency's website www.RainbowSkyTravel.com!!!!!!!

Who doesn't like to get travel at a discount!?!??

You can read about my interest in my (Seti@Home) profile and get some idea of the travel discount I'm talking about. Just read my profile http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/view_profile.php?userid=1905451.

To sum it up, for anyone participating in Seti@Home, LHC, CPDN, Einstein, Protein Folding, etc. (basically anyone participating in a BOINC project), I want to extend a travel discount. For a cruise, vacation package, hotel rentals, or car rentals, I'm offering a 1% discount off the base (net) price. For cruises and vacation packages, the discount comes off up front. For hotels and car rentals, the discount is mailed back to you in the form of a check (in the U.S.) or via certified funds to anyone not in the U.S. As for airline tickets and train tickets, since the majority of airlines do not compensate travel agents anymore, I cannot offer a discount off of the airline ticket price, but the discount I can offer for airline tickets and train tickets will be half-off the transaction/service fee. By phone, our transaction fee for airline and train tickets is US$25 per ticket. On our website it is US$10. So, the discount, if you were to go to our website to book would be US$5 per ticket and US$12.50 by phone.

To receive the discounted transaction fee for airline tickets and to receive your discount on car rentals and hotel bookings, at the end of the booking process, please mention you are a BOINC user in the Comments section. If you make any cruise or vacation bookings on my website, please e-mail me at torrey@wi.rr.com with your name (first and last) and let me know that you made a reservation. That way, I can process the discount for you.

Our website is located at www.RainbowSkyTravel.com.

As for people who join my team, they will receive even more special treatment by means of a higher discount on travel. Members will receive the details upon joining my team.

These projects are not created for you to create business leads. Take your flat-out commercialism elsewhere please.

Tutta, as I replied to your other comment on another site:

What's wrong with me offering a discount. No one has to buy travel from my site. I'm simply looking for a way to get people to join my group.

If you don't want to, fine, don't.

Like I said in my original post on this, no one here is compensated for their crunching, but a lot of people end up spending a lot of money on electricity and buying/upgrading equipment jsut to crunch. That's great. That's what they decided to do.

BUT, at the same time if they are going to travel, why not get it at a discounted rate as my way of saying for me to personally say thank you for crunching!?!

I started crunching with Grid.org because I had lost someone very very close to me from Cancer. I honestly am very touched by all the people that crunch in the name of science.

I'd even be willing to match the discount and send it to a cancer charity, Seti@Home, etc. if that was the wish of any "would-be" clients from this site.

What is wrong with it, is that you are using these projects for commercial purposes. Most of us have some business we could advertise here. If everybody did that, we might just as well call it seti@eBay, predictor@eBay, ...

And you are so honorous to compensate users for their effort? And that simply without any minds behind? Whats your benefit from doing so? And consider that the users are not able to reconstruct whether they are really getting a discount or not. So it seems to me you're only advertising your business with offering an honorous behaviour and the benefit lies only with you in geeting new customers that pay in the final result the original price.

Microtoxic,

Actually, every person is able to check on the rates I can offer. Maybe you've heard of it, it's called the internet and web-based travel agencies. It's quite simple to know that they'd be getting a discount. As a matter of fact, for every airline ticket that might be purchased from someone using these boards, we actually loose money on it. The airlines to NOT pay travela agents in the U.S., Canada and most do not pay British travel agents either. So, a measly little transaction fee that I was offering for the benefit of all boinc users is actually just that, a benefit. It's apparant that the three of you can't see someone trying to be nice. It's also apparant that the three of you didn't read why I was even doing it.

I'm not looking to make money off of anyone here, but I am looking to give a benefit to those that may want to take advantage of it. Again, I covered how getting a discount is a nice perk for those that are leaving their PCs on 24/7 and/or adding new PCs to run boinc all of which take extra elecricity that they otherwise would not be using.

Also, if there are other business owners that are able to offer their products for next to nothing all the while loosing money on some of their products that they may be willing to sell to boinc users, please, let us all know about it. I bet though, that not one other business owner is willing to discount their business product or services so as to actually loose money on each sale.

If you don't like it, keep your dislike for what may benefit others to yourselves.

Also, you'll be able to see from my stats that I just didn't sign up yesterday and do a posting like this. Right there tells you I am about the crunching, not looking to make a profit. I have local clients in my area that pay retail cost for their travel, and it's those local clients where I make my money. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't even have been able to offer Boinc users the offer I made to them.

Sorry, Trlauer, we can see that you're a genuine cruncher with not just one, but several computers working hard for cpdn. However, we have to take notice of Honza's judgment because he's a Moderator from the classic phpBB forum with long experience of what to do here and what not to do. I think the rest of us agree with him that however well-intentioned your offer is, advertising in any way on these messageboards is a no-no.

What you can do instead is add your website link and the name of your group as a signature, so everyone will see them whenever you post.

mo.v, since you put it so much nicer, I then do offer my sincere apology for using poor judgement in placing my post.

Since I don't normally post as my PCs run the Boinc projects without problems, adding a signature to my post won't help getting people to join my group. I will just accept that my group won't be adding any crunchers to it.

Thank you again for being nicer (more eloquent) than the other two. Being nice always gets someone further than being rude and arrogant sounding.

Well, do come back and post from time to time. The climate sections are really interesting.
