I keep getting this message:
climateprediction.net - 2005-03-16 17:55:51 - Backing off 1 minutes and 38 seconds on transfer of file hadsm3data_4.10_windows_intelx86.zip

It's been running smoothly in the background for a few weeks, but two or three days ago BOINC started trying to connect to the internet (I use a slow dialup connection) and kept giving me the above error message. I did a quick search, but couldn't see if anyone had any solutions.

Looking at your results, it appears that your model crashed, and BOINC tried to get another.

The new version of hadsm (4.10), is 'signed', but you're still using BOINC 4.19, which uses 'unsigned' files.

The error messages (below), seem to indicate that the new hadsm files insist on a 'signed' version of BOINC.
I didn't think BOINC 4.19 would cause a problem, but that's computers for you. :(

SO:
Suspend BOINC,
Exit BOINC,
Download the new BOINC 4.25 from <a href="http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php"> here,</a> uninstall the old version, (add/remove in Control Panel), and run the new version.

It's a bit big at over 9Megs, and took me a while on my dialup, but you get there eventually.
There's an ugly box to the left, but it works OK. And hadsm 4.10 has a new option in the Graphics: W
(for World, I guess), which I really like.

Just so that it doesn't come as a surprise: after the change of OS, BOINC will see it as a different computer,
and your new models will be recorded and credited as such.

And don't forget to write down your account ID first! perhaps copy the email in plain text to a floppy.

I like XP. It's nice and stable. As is BOINC 4.25, although I've only had that for 5 days.

Backup your whole BOINC folder and put it back when your Win XP box is ready.
Or you can install BOINC afresh (with service/startup option or whatever suits your), but skip the attachement to the project and overwrite with backup.

I am still running 4.19 because the work is into Phase 3 and almost complete. what's the big advantage with 4.25 and is there an objection to continuing with 4.19 to completion (i.e. to avoid screwups of all previous work) ?

and XP is very stable, especially after SP2 installation.

I downloaded 4.19 and installed directly over the previous (4.10?) and it just kept on going. Is it absolutely necessary to remove 4.9? Isn't the process just like any other upgrade?

If you only run CPDN, just stay with 4.19 until they get their signature bug done.

Otherwise the 4.2x has more features (suspending single WUs and/or projects, better security through signatures, install as a service and remote controll for your farm and some other issues), but also some minor disadvantages (mostly on the GUI-design).

It's nor just another update, but a whole new installer. It's incompatible to the old one, and won't just update.

If you unpack/run 4.25 while you have another version installed, it will tell you to uninstall it first, and then aborts.
Leave everything where it is, (backup BOINC of course, to be sure, to be sure),
and then the new version will tell you,
(in Messages), that you are upgrading:

You and Grube Vom Sanger have been very helpful. this whole exercise must be mundane and almost boring to the computer expert, but several of you (as indicated by the number of posts) are obviously essential to keeping the less proficient in the game, and thus you are invaluable to the process. In translation it is quite funny! Apologies for my ignorance of the language. Many years ago (1958)I had two very good friends from Bavaria, Willi und Margaret Kuemmel, who told me that I should learn to sprecken sie deutsch because I did well with what they tried on me. That never happened, and as you have found out I am thus somewhat diminished in my ability to communicate outside Canada. Willi was a miner, and a very good pastry chef. An unlikely combination, but he excelled at both trades.
