I have a Pentium 2.4 w/ 512 MB RAM and I'm only getting about 8.8 s/TS. It's set to run always, and the computer is running BOINC all the time.

My gateway us running the same setup at 9.0 s/TS and that has a Celeron 1.3 in it.

Any ideas?

On pressing ctrl-alt-del to get task manager, what cpu usage% are you getting between various processes?

Are you running the graphics or BOINC screensaver? If so, that can take up a huge amount of CPU time, depending (somewhat) on your video card.

I am not running the screensaver or graphics at all, it just runs in the background 24/7.

At idle, at which the computer I'm running BOINC on spends a lot of time, the % CPU usage by BOINC apps is around 99%. I can't figure out why the performance is so bad.

Is this PC a laptop, or doing thermal throttling? A number of laptops and some desktop PCs will throttle down P4 speeds, or insert idle cycles if the temperature gets too high. You can run cpu-z to determine if the CPU speed is being slowed down. You can run Throttlewatch to see if idle cycles are being inserted.

Yes it is a laptop. I didn't know the system would throttle itself to control temperature. If the fan is any indication, the system is not running too hot at all. The fan runs at a slow speed most of the time and only kicks on high speed after extended intensive use. It never kicks on high speed while idling running BOINC. I'l try CPU-Z and see if it can provide any info.

Ran CPU-Z and it did not give any info and the CPU was running just under 2.4 GHz. Throttle watch reported 0% Thermal Throttling.

BOINC itself is consistently reporting just under 600 double precision MIPS, and just under 1700 integer MIPS. All of this with about 96% CPU time going to BOINC apps, and that's with Firefox open while typing this.

I just downloaded a utility that allows you to control the fan speed on my laptop. It also takes the sensor readings for CPU temp. The cpu is reported as being 75 degress Celsius. I manually set the fan to high speed and i'm going to see if it helps at all.

Have a look at this thread, and read microtoxic's last post.

Thanks, I opened up my case tonight and there was no dust to be found. The channels the fan blows through the heat sink are clear and still the processor runs at 2.394 Ghz (2.4) with no throttling indicated. I'm stumped. 99% processor going to BOINC.
