Hello,

I just tried to look in the other forum (and on the home page) for some hours, and after failing constantly I tried a tracert. Here's the outcome:

Same problem here for the last couple hours. Hacked? Server crash?

If the Open University server has been hacked again, they will NOT be putting our phpbb forum back in a hurry. Hope it's just a server failure, and that the techs work Saturdays.

Just tried the emergency backup forum. It's still up. And a trickle that I just uploaded has made it OK.

No connection here - not just the forum but the whole Oxford site. Whatever the cause, I expect Tolu will be groaning. BTW, Monday is a public holiday in the UK and good weather has been forecast, so a lot of people will be planning a long weekend away........

Oxford uni being dead would explain the front page, but the other forum is on KMI servers, at The Open Uni at Milton Keynes, 40 or so miles to the NE of Oxford.
And now there's a 3 day weekend.
145 hours, (6 days), until my next model, (a 4.12), uploads. Time for some extra praying.

Fine sunny autumn Saturday morning here in Sydney.
We had last Monday as a p.u. for Anzac day. What's the holiday, Monday, for?

> What's the holiday, Monday, for?

May Day. Or the first Monday in May, as UK public holidays are on Mondays except for Christmas and New Year. May Day was a traditional festival in parts of England, but has a more immediate association with the labour movement. It became a public holiday in the 1970s but is not popular because it comes sandwiched between Easter Monday and the last Monday in May which is the Spring holiday (originally the Monday after Whitsun (Pentecost)).

It's a bit difficult to celebrate what a holiday is intended to be for when it isn't held on the real day. Calendar-wise, the British rather lack a sense of occasion.

Having public holidays on Mondays is probably to discourage us from copying the bad (?) French/Spanish habit of 'faire le pont'. When a public holiday is on a Thursday, these continentals quite disgracefully also want the Friday off as they think it isn't worth going in to work for just one day.

The French have been asked to give up one of their 13 public holidays, May 16, to fund more care for the aged and disabled. Some unions are refusing to comply. Apparently the SNCF has capitulated to its workers and is allowing them to have May 16 off, BUT staff will have to work an extra 1m 52sec every working day of the year to compensate. I hope they all have accurate atomic watches.

Thanks Andrew and Mo.
If I'd looked at the calendar for tomorrow, I may have guessed. I've heard of May Day a bit over the years. Although a lot of the fun from years past is probably considered unacceptable to various ethnic groups these days.

As for accurate clocks, there was a news item last night about a new atomic clock developed in Western Australia, that is accurate to 1 second in a few million years. The main element is sapphire, and the ESA is keen to get hold of one to send to the ISS.

And the WA people are working on a more accurate clock, based on light and ultra-cold atoms. This one is expected to be accurate to +- 1 second in 10 billion years.
Not too portable, but you may get it into a small trailer.

Just a thought: I think that Oxford must be working, because I can get to my account page, and we're posting on this board. The Q & P board is also there, and all 3 of these are at Oxford.
The front page has the same url as the community forum, so it's the OU server(s), or maybe the KMI servers which are down.

I'd keep my fingers crossed, but it's too hard to do anything like that, and last time, we lost the forum for two months.

Well, the climateprediction.net is not working for me neither, while all http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/ pages (forum, account page) work fine.
Here in Spain, if a public holiday happens on Sunday, people will take Monday off (isn't that neat?) so we've got a long weekend ahead.... :-) take care and enjoy the sun! :-D

looks like it's OpenU down (at least the main CPDN server there) but the Oxford servers seem to be up. It is a long weekend in the UK so I wouldn't expect the main site to be up until Tuesday.

G'day, Les,

Shouldn't be a problem. Three Models from two different machines uploaded within the last 24-hours -- the five summary files and final Trickle to their respective servers. [Edited to correct a typo.]

(To be honest, and being a dark-cloud rather than silver-lining sort, I'm still a bit anxious because a couple more Models are due to go up later today.)

Of course my new Sempron machine just got put together and is just sitting here idle with no ability to get a model! >:(

Oh well. :)

BTW the Sempron 2800+ or 2600+ OC all the way up to ~2.4 GHz (from 1.6GHz).

Doh! I almost tried something like that but thought it might screw up my results.

Thanks for the info!

nah, this URL is fine to use for BOINC, the main climateprediction.net page just redirects to this via BOINC, so this is simply the direct link:

Yesterday I eventually managed to get to the classic cpdn user login page, but it wouldn't let me log in to see my classic model results. Today it has allowed me to log on and I see that my machine has trickled to Oxford (or Milton Keynes?). My stats are all up-to-date and I can tell from the group stats page that other classic users are also trickling normally.

I've been able to upload a finished WU last night, but not to report it or download any new work. Guess that will have to wait till tomorrow... ;-)
No trickles for the end of Phase 3 have appeared as yet, though. Is it because the WU has not yet been reported? Last trickles show as April 29.

For last 2 days (I was away before that) all I get, when I try to update, is:
2.5.2005 12:02:06|climateprediction.net|Master file fetch failed.

Is anyone else having the same trouble?

I looked at my messages and this keeps coming up:

02/05/2005 11:34:50|climateprediction.net|Deferring communication with project for 1 minutes and 0 seconds

My trickles seem to upload okay

Looks to be back up now (along with the phpbb forum), although the stats on the main climateprediction.net page haven't updated yet.
