I have recently started running climateprediction software, and have noticed that immediately the software becomes active the cooling fan starts on my Toshiba Tecra S1 and stops again immediately the application becomes inactive, with no apparent relation to the computer requiring cooling or not. I don't want the fan to be running unnecessarily. Any ideas? Thanks Andrew Matthews |

Hi, It seems logical that the fans start when CPDN starts: Boinc/CPDN uses 100% of the CPU power and your CPU needs to be cooled in this extreme condition, especially on a laptop computer. It would be a bad idea to run CPDN without the fans: your CPU wouldn't last very long. Arnaud |

I agree. My (desktop) CPU goes from 35°C to 50°C as soon as CPDN starts running and goes back to 35°C as soon as it stops. There definitely is a good reason why the fan should be running as soon as CPDN starts. Especially as it will keep your laptop from throttling (or however that is spelled) down. Friedrich I love CPDN! -- |

>> with no apparent relation to the computer requiring cooling or not. In regard to this comment, the bios normally monitors the cpu temperature and automatically adjusts the fans as required. You can also get software that will display the temperature readings for you. Hope this helps. And welcome to cpdn :) Bones |

You can also get software that will display the temperature readings I have been running CCE in my laptop for about a month now 24/7 monitoring the temperature at 57C. It is sitting on a \'docking station\' which is essentially two fans drawing the air away from underneath. I\'ve just shut it down first time and far from the laptop being on the point of melting the whole thing felt as cool as a cucumber. The external power supply was red hot though, almost too hot to handle. As for the laptop fans (there are two or three inside it), yes they come on as soon as BOINC starts up, and stay on for quite a while, but they don\'t stay on continuously. But then I have the extra \'docking station\' fans (which are super quiet as opposed to the noisy laptop fans). |
