Hi. I started a unit/model on an old laptop and now want to move it to another PC - where it wont take 60 days to complete. The lap top is overheating and needs to be junked tbh. Is this possible? Anyone done this before successfully? |

All my PCs do run boinc so.......hmmm. If anyone else knows how this can be done I would appreciate you posting here. Thanks. |

You'll need to merge the client_state.xml file from the system you're decommissioning into the one on the system you're moving the model to. It require a few changes to the bits you're moving across and a bit of manipulation of the slots directory. If you're running more than one project and want to copy the others across too it's even more complicated. But it can be done if you're feeling brave :) If you still want to go ahead and need any specific advice you can send me a PM on the phpBB forum (you'll need to register first if you haven't already).
Join us here |

Hmmmm..all looks complicated and risky. Just hope the laptop does not give up too soon! Thanks guys for coming back. ========== It may not be all that hard to do if you want to take the chance. All though I've never tried to move a CPDN WU to another Computer I have moved LHC WU's many times with success & it's really a very simple procedure. The following is the procedure I have used to move LHC WU's many times to another Computer... 1. Suspend all Projects in the Directory the CPDN WU or WU's are in now ... 2. Copy the entire Directory to the Computer you want the CPDN WU or WU's on ... 3. Start up the BOINC Client and just Un-Suspend the CPDN Project (or all Projects in that Directory if your going to be running them on that Computer) ... 4. If this works for the CPDN WU or WU's all it will do is create another Host ID in your Account and your off and running ... Now just leave the original Directory on the original Computer the CPDN WU or WU's came from alone until the CPDN WU or WU's are finished on the Computer you moved them to. You can Un-Suspend any other Projects and continue to run them on the that computer though, just leave them suspended on the Computer you Copied the Directory to ... Or you can take the chance and just delete the original Directory (which I've done with success) from the original Computer. Don't Detach or Reset because I think this will send a signal to the Server that your not running the WU's any more ... PS: I've seen a post (but I can't find it now) some where here about just copying the entire Directory to another computer by one of the Dev's I think, so this must work or they wouldn't be giving that advice out I would think ... |
