I get connection refused when trying to access Climateprediction.net discussion forum. I can't get through as well. I just tried to trace the server: <i>C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Uwe>tracert www.climateprediction.net Routenverfolgung zu www.climateprediction.net [137.108.64.33] über maximal 30 Abschnitte: 1 56 ms 56 ms 58 ms 212-62-80-254.teleos-web.de [212.62.80.254] 2 56 ms 55 ms 55 ms m5-re.dts-online.net [212.62.64.3] 3 58 ms 61 ms 60 ms hbg-b2-pos2-0-0.telia.net [213.248.76.89] 4 60 ms 60 ms 60 ms hbg-bb2-pos0-1-0.telia.net [213.248.65.181] 5 69 ms 67 ms 69 ms ffm-bb2-pos7-0-0.telia.net [213.248.65.121] 6 70 ms 69 ms 69 ms ffm-b2-pos2-2.telia.net [213.248.64.178] 7 69 ms 68 ms 69 ms unknown.Level3.net [195.122.136.249] 8 77 ms 67 ms 69 ms ae-0-51.bbr1.Frankfurt1.Level3.net [195.122.136.1] 9 84 ms 84 ms 84 ms as-1-0.bbr1.London2.Level3.net [212.187.128.61] 10 85 ms 84 ms 86 ms ge-3-0-0.gar1.London2.Level3.net [4.68.124.62] 11 84 ms 84 ms 83 ms 195.50.116.202 12 85 ms 83 ms 84 ms po3-0.lond-scr4.ja.net [146.97.35.225] 13 86 ms 84 ms 84 ms gi0-1.lond-bar4.ja.net [146.97.35.210] 14 * * 89 ms 146.97.41.146 15 * * * Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung. 16 * * * Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung. 17 * * * Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung. 18 * * * Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung. 19 * * * Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung. 20 * * * Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung. 21 *</i> There seems to be a problem somewhere over the channel. Can't contact it from here in the UK either, so we will have to wait. Might be down for maintenance; if it is a more general problem experience suggests that we may have to wait for Monday. |

Hi, We were informed at 9:45 pm that the power was going to be cut to the server at the Open University. This is out of the hands of both Oxford and Open University, needless to say we are not happy that the power has been cut at such short notice. This outage will only affect the web site and php forum. Uploads, downloads and trickles will all function as normal (apart from the credit allocation which still seems to be broken) as will these BOINC forums as these are housed on servers at Oxford. |

Thanks for informing us promptly, Neil. I wonder whether the power cut had anything to do with the thunderstorms around 6pm certainly in Hampshire and Dorset, maybe also further north? Some of the thunderclaps were terrifying. __________________________________________________ |

Yeah truely great storm here in NE Hants ... from 14:00 onwards. Power to my PCs went twice.....need to think about a UPS perhaps. <img src="http://www.boincsynergy.com/images/stats/comb-1091.jpg"></img><br><img src="http://www.iantighe.com/setisig.jpg"></img><img border="0" src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/teamStats.php?userID=1602&prj=1&trans=off"> |

What does UPS mean please? I have a surge protector for the electricity, but when lightning is expected, I think it's also a good idea to disconnect the computer from the phone line. __________________________________________________ |

What does UPS mean please? ========== Definition for UPS: Short for uninterruptible power supply, a power supply that includes a battery to maintain power in the event of a power outage. Typically, a UPS keeps a computer running for several minutes after a power outage, enabling you to save data that is in RAM and shut down the computer gracefully. Many UPSs now offer a software component that enables you to automate backup and shut down procedures in case there's a power failure while you're away from the computer. There are two basic types of UPS systems: standby power systems (SPSs) and on-line UPS systems. An SPS monitors the power line and switches to battery power as soon as it detects a problem. The switch to battery, however, can require several milliseconds, during which time the computer is not receiving any power. Standby Power Systems are sometimes called Line-interactive UPSes. An on-line UPS avoids these momentary power lapses by constantly providing power from its own inverter, even when the power line is functioning properly. In general, on-line UPSs are much more expensive than SPSs. |

Though the SPS takes several milliseconds to switch, in general, the computer power supply's internal smoothing components (capacitors) will hold up the voltage. However, the switch may introduce a spike that may cause the computer to do odd things ... like reset ... |

Thanks for the explanations. Looks like a useful extra piece of equipment for computers working 24/7. The automated backup type sounds better. This is the first time after a weekend cpdn server outage in England that reconnection has happened during the same weekend AFAIK. __________________________________________________ |

Mo.v, Both types have programs that run and will monitor the UPS/SPS and allow testing or signaled shutdown. |
