If you are comfortable with what you have, I would wait until there is a mandatory reason to switch.

I'd advise you to upgrade to at least 4.19 (still available on the BOINC download page). It fixes a number of BOINC client problems that you've been lucky not to experience with 4.10.

Upgrading to 4.4? is by no means compulsory (but will probably be strongly recommended for the next version of the hadsm3 application).

How "strongly"? Strongly enough to be required or just a little strongly?

I'm happy with 4.19 - well, I am happier with cmdline programs like SETI Classic but ... well, I'm happy with 4.19 and I'm a little afraid to "win" more strange behaviours than those I learned to live with (and trick them), loose control even more and probably some of the reliability.

I hope it will just be "a little strongly" ;-)

It all depends on whether the next version uses the new intermediate upload feature that was added to the BOINC client for the Sulphur cycle experiment. If it does an upgrade will be required ...

The version 4.x (in my opinion) is not as bad as some make out it to be. If CPDN is a big part of what you are doing, you may want to wait to finsih the model in work. I am using 4.3 through 4.45 and to be honest 4.45 works well for me.

I have to use 4.43 on the Mac and there may be an issue there. all my models crash very quickly ... so, if you are using a Mac again you may want to wait. But I am not sure if this is a BOINC or CPDN problem. But since the Mac are low spot contributers I am not sure this is going to be cured anytime soon.

But, unlike others, I don't mind the issues, I just do the other 3 Mac projects on the Mac and it keeps busy. Though I would wish that the BOINC would be compiled for one of the later versions ...

Paul: I'm running the Team MacNN "boinc_4.44_ppcG4superbench" on my 1 GHz PowerBook successfully. It takes about 4% less CPU time to complete a trickle, and the scheduler and pausing play nice with SETI, which is the only other project running on this machine. I'm running both as CLI versions from Terminal - I haven't tried running CPDN under MenuBar or BOINC Manager.

Well, I am using the GUI ... especially as I need to take pictures for others, well, I can't always, and don't want to run something too far out of the mainstream. If we get to a more stable era, I will come back to that ...

Is there any truth in rumours that we will be forced to upgrade to at least 4.19 or be left unable to download new work?

If true, it might be sensible, if you are still running on less than 4.19, to upgrade sooner rather than later.

I think if you are upgrading you may as well go for the latest 4.4x
I like the idea of the scheduler helping you avoid missed deadlines.

If you prefer to swap projects frequently and are not concerned about missed deadlines, you may prefer 4.19 (or maybe 4.25).

Are there any other reasons not to go for the latest in the 4.4x series?
(Or any other preferred versions?)

The benchmark problem is a negative of later versions of BOINC. Perhaps not enough to discourage the upgrade, but still a problem.

To be honest, the only negative is that BOINC seems to work better ... I am using 4.45 and 4.43 (PowerMac) and aside from the fact that the PowerMac does not like CPDN, I have no complaints. Of course, if you want to complain, well, that is a big negative right there ... :)

Seriously, the major hurdle to get over for 4.45 is that it does not work like 4.3x and lower ... so, if you are used to having "x" in BOINC and for it to work like "y", you are going to have problems. ESPECIALLY IF YOU TRY TO MAKE IT WORK LIKE THE OLDER VERSIONS!

Sorry, but, that is the crux of the negativity. The other thing is the benchmarks were fixed, with the side effect of lowering the scores. Because people have this mania that the benchmark determines how fast they process, lower numbers are threatening. Oh, and though we don't care about credit, it might lower you claims a little ... PANIC! PANIC! PANIC!

sigh ...

Uprgade, so they will release the 4.7x series and I can move on with life ...

The benchmark problem I was talking about was the one reported in the Windows forum here with 4.45, and in sulphur beta, where the application would not restart after a failed benchmark. It appears to be happening a not inconsiderable amount, at least in CPDN. See here for what I was referring to.
