I have a dual 550mhz 1meg L2 xeon setup with nt4. Is this really to small to use for this project. It says in the technical bit that 800mhz is the lowest. The machine would be left on 24*7 Ta Nairb <img /> |

The 800 MHz is not a hard limit. There are some people successfully using processors as slow as PII 233. The reason for suggesting 800MHz is that it takes a very long time on those slower computers. Xeon would probably be OK. If anything the problem may be more with nt4. If you are not into BOINC and BOINC credits, the classic experiment available from the Open university course pages might be more likely to succeed. |

Ok, so 550mhz should manage. Why is the nt4 sp6a an issue. I actually run several other dual machines for other boinc projects and use nt4 etc fine for those. Just wondered whats with the nt4 problem. Thanks Nairb <img border="0" src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/stats.php?userID=343" /> |

Oh oops I forgot to say Classic can only run once. With a dual you will probably want to run 2 models so you might want to try BOINC. The 500k lines are code are a beast to get running and stable. When BOINC was first introduced it wouldn't run stable on Win98 or NT4. Then Carl found an unsupported call and rewrote it so that it would work. Sadly since then a upgrade to later versions seems to have introduced more problems. I am just not sure whether everyone is failing or just some. I know some people are getting credit with NT4 but this does not guarantee that a sufficient proportion or even any are successfully completing models. If you are willing, try it and see. |

You should be able to tell pretty fast if it works on your setup or not. My experience with instability is that the models will die pretty fast. If you get 4-5 in a row that die young then CPDN is not suitable for your system. My advice is to only run one model along with other projects so that you don't spool up too many failures too quickly. If you are running one of the 4.4x versions you can turn down more work. The last CPDN I tried on my PowerMac I changed the project to download no more work. Job done. I got 2 wu's down and its been stable for 24 hrs. Its going to take 2500 hrs to complete the 2. Having done this I just got 2 700 mhz 1Meg L2 cpus. As long as you are not making a major change to the operating system (eg Win XP to Linux), you should be able to put in new hardware. BOINC should detect the change, run the benchmarks and carry on. Finally got round to fitting the 700mhz xeon's. And it worked fine. Surprised that you could change the cpu's without a detach etc. Anyway with such a vast (joke) increase in speed the models should complete this year!!. The system has been stable: win NT4 sp6a. OK, I think this is related to this thread but could be wrong - admins feel free to move it, thanks. I have an old PIII 450mhz in storage minus Hard drive, and was wondering if its worthwhile fixing it up to run one climateprediction.net model under Windows 98SE. At the moment I have 2 x LGA775's crunching away on 4 models and they love it!! lol! so a little bit more might help. I actually have the urge to restore this 'old' PC and use it for emergency internet/email access when its not executing some project - just in case. |

Windows 98SE is no longer supported under BOINC, but can run on 'classic' cpdn. Some people are trying to run it with BOINC, but no one has posted saying that they have completed a model. It's up to you if you want to try. |

Just been looking for hosts with 6805 credits and Windows 98. I found 11 examples from looking at about 500 and all showed 1 model completed sucessfully followed by 1 to 129 failed models starting on or after 3 March. I was running dual 700MHz Pentium III (Coppermine 256kB cache) under XP Pro SP2 until I found two x 1GHz CPUs at a 2nd hand shop for cheap. At 700MHz I completed two WU in about 117 days. You should expect better performance from the bigger cache the Xeons have. On a laptop running Pentium 4 - M 2.26GHz XP Home SP2, one WU in about 36 days. I also had a 233 Pentium II Win2000 running at 262MHz, but it was going to be running forever to finish one WU so its crunching seti instead. You might try a BOINC client that is optimised for Xeon CPUs, though these are mostly Linux clients. Climate Prediction doesn't have an optimised client though many other BOINC projects do. There are some excellent guides to other clients on other BOINC fora.
