First I ran Windows 98 and now I\'m running Windows XP Pro and no matter what I do, in time I receive the same message. None of the work units I receive go too far without receiving the same client error message. 4.45 - exit code -5 (0xfffffffb) For information purposes I also run Einstein, Seti, and Predictor from the same Boinc program with no problems. What can I do to keep this problem from repeating itself and contribute to this program or am I just wasting the projects time with incomplete work units? |

Since the error message just means that the CPDN application crashed (which you knew) it will take a bit of detective work to pin down just why it happened. One option is hardware. For example, the CPU may be overheating or you might have flakey memory. Or you may be overclocking too much. CPDN is about as demanding a computer task as they come, and the fact that your machine copes with everything else doesn't mean that it is happy with this job. There is some general advice on machine testing and maintenance <A href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewforum.php?f=23">here</a>. The other possibility is software/system related. For example, there is a <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=2895">known conflict with certain AV software</a>. I wish there were a simple answer, but come back if you want more advice. There are lots of more knowledgeable people than me around. |

Hmmm, I wonder if that is what is killing my models on the PowerMac... <p> <a href="http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php"><b>BOINC-Wiki</b></a> <img src="http://www.boincstats.com/stats/banner.php?cpid=a6477942e70ed39f669d1ff2ede05be8"> |

Check out the all knowing WIKI Unrecoverable error for result '(result)' ( - exit code -5 (0xffffffb)) From BOINCWiki Table of contents [showhide] 1 General 2 Version Information 3 Example Log 3.1 Crash! 3.2 Permanently Failed Upload of File 4 Other Related Messages [edit]General Message Type: Error Message This message means that the BOINC Client Software has detected a failure of the Science Application which has occurred because of an internal error (it "crashed"). These errors may be the result of a hardware error, but are more likely because of a problem with the Science Application software and the Work Unit that it is trying to process. These errors shouild be reported to the Project so that they can try to find the problem in the software. <a href="http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page">Link to Unoffical Wiki for BOINC, by Paul and Friends</a> |

> Check out the all knowing WIKI I'm sure that Paul will be pleased at your promotion of BOINC-Wiki, but I don't think he needs telling about it :) What we know about these crashes in the CPDN app. both in Classic and BOINC, is that they tend to be machine specific. Occasional crashes may indeed relate to the particular WU, but experienced users know they are comparatively rare. Hardware is one cause of failure in CPDN because it stresses machines far more than most things, and doubters have often come back later having tracked down a fault. The rest are elusive, but the occasional success in finding the cause, as with AV software or driver conflicts, show that it is well worth looking. |

I have had the -5 error on 2 of my PCs. Just can't run cpdn on them but other PCs are fine. I just accept there is something awry but cannot detect it for now. The other PCs do run seti and lhc just fine btw. Whilst this does not help you track it down it is first hand current info to reassure you that you are not alone. <img src="http://www.boincsynergy.com/images/stats/comb-1091.jpg"></img><br><img src="http://www.iantighe.com/setisig.jpg"></img><img border="0" src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/teamStats.php?userID=1602&prj=1&trans=off"> |

I should add this ... {done} look and see if my rearranging of the words did not destroy what you meant ... <p> <a href="http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php"><b>BOINC-Wiki</b></a> <img src="http://www.boincstats.com/stats/banner.php?cpid=a6477942e70ed39f669d1ff2ede05be8"> |

You have faithfully reproduced my message, Paul, though I'm sure plenty of people could say it better and more helpfully ;) |

Well my P4 just completed its 3rd succesful workunit, and now is crashing with everyone downloaded within seconds today. No application change either! Last time it was at least caused by going from 4.09->4.12 Last time I had issues with the exit code -5 it was due to free-av.com causing some issue, thats no longer on any of my PCs and was replaced with avast.com I went and attached to Climate on another one of my PCs and just had the same results as the P4 is having now so I'm thinking its similar to the last time. Going to try uninstalling avast.com to see if Cliamte's found another program it can't get along with. I may end up having to stop running climate due to this which is unfortunate as I really enjoy this project. UPDATE: AVAST Anti virus is not the cause, the search continues. |

OK another update. I took one of my computers thats currently at 43% on a 4.12 model. Suspended all the other projects I'm running, and then suspended the individual Climate WU, causing climate to download a new WU. WU crashed within 5 seconds. Went and unsuspended the climate unit that was at 43%, kept crunching like nothing happened. So whatever the problem is, its something to do with the start of the WU. |

I just sorta rearranged it to be consistent with my style ... hey, if you steal from one person it is plagiarism ... steal from 50 and it is research ... <p> <a href="http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php"><b>BOINC-Wiki</b></a> <img src="http://www.boincstats.com/stats/banner.php?cpid=a6477942e70ed39f669d1ff2ede05be8"> |
