I threw together a <A HREF="http://cpdn.comlab.ox.ac.uk/map/cpdnboinc.html">CPDN/BOINC User Map</A> (based on trickles received since I started tracking them). Unfortunately we ran out of money for our maxmind.com ip->lat/long service, but if I get the go-ahead I will buy 100K more lookups! :-) |

Great! I live in the middle of nowhere. No dot for Quebec City. |

Holy cow. Makes me feel lonely with there being so much space before another dot appears. EDIT> After seeing the other comments, maybe I shouldn't assume that dot near Seattle is even me?? Mark <IMG SRC="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/cpdn/stats.php?userID=41&trans=off&team=off"> |

Nothing but space where I live, no dot. Unless they got me in California; what an insult! Oh well. ;-D <img src="http://web.intermind.net/im/images/vegas.gif"> <img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/cpdn/stats.php?userID=35&trans=off"><a href="http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/thefinalfrontear/index.html">Team Site Link</a> |

Going by the number of user listed by country below the map, there are ten missing dots on the US portion of the map. No dot where I live either. :) Cool map though. And although you it's hard to tell due to image compression and small size, that's the same sat map I use in my sig. <a><img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/cpdn/stats.php?userID=18"></a> |

Very cool map. I wonder if there would be any way to include that imformation in the screensaver? <br>John Keck BOINCing since 2002/12/08 |

Nice! Looks like there is even a dot in Kansas. Wohoo! Probably for the guy in Topeka since my first trickle was only a day or two ago but at that scale, I can pretend it is Manhattan :) <br> ---------------------------- A member of The Knights Who Say Ni! Hi, in case you're worried about not showing up on the map, here's the logic: 1) it will only start for trickles after 2AM GMT 26-Aug-'04 (i.e. when I put the IP address in the trickle table for the BOINC code ;-). So it could be I haven't received a trickle from your machine yet that I can get the IP address from our apache web server (i.e. you need to trickle since 2AM this morning when I did it!) 2) since my $50 web service IP lookup for lat-long ran out (125K queries used up over "CPDN Classic" over the last year) I signed up for another 125K queries (hope Myles gets me refunded ;-). Thanks to the dropping US dollar it was only £27 this year vs £30 last year! :-) 3) so there's a backlog of "dots" on the map that I'm waiting to get my new account information for the web service (FYI it is maxmind.com, they have free country/IP lookups that BOINC uses but lat/long is a "pay service"). But to save money I only look up the first 24-bits of an IP and avoid duplicates, so 125K queries should last us quite awhile. |

Got mine too - nice idea btw! Now waiting for the "You are here" dot in the visualization to be implemented ;) |

> Got mine too - nice idea btw! > Now waiting for the "You are here" dot in the visualization to be implemented > ;) actually that's possible now with boinc, we can "trickle_down" a small message which is your lat/long (or just have you enter it on your pref web page) and voila, print it on the globe. I'm sure that will be in a future version so you can see your "black dot" sweating in your future hot grid box! :-) I'm glad you guys like the map, it was always fun to watch on the old CPDN days and so I thought I would continue the tradition with BOINC. the code's pretty easy so I can make it available for other BOINC projects that want it. It helps get a feel for the "power" of distributed computing, even with just a few hundred trickles and not even 2K total users so far you can see the worldwide range of users! |

I would bet that if you submitt the code to turn either the postal code or the IP address into a world map to the BOINC development team they would inculde it in future revisions of the server software. I wouldn't be suprized to see combined maps come out at 3rd party stats sites too. Basing it on the postal code would be probably be preferred since not all projects may be willing to spend the $50 for the IP lookup service. <br>John Keck BOINCing since 2002/12/08 |

well the $50 for 125K lookups has lasted about a year, and even longer since I just look up different first 24-bits of an IP address (i.e. 163.1.242.1 and 163.1.242.255 are just 163.1.242.1 to me) and store to a database table for future use. I always figured this was more "official" than just hoping people put in their actual country & zip code. Plus zip codes vary by country and you'd have to do a different query or dataset for each country? I haven't seen a "whole earth postal code" lookup (but then again I just ran across the maxmind IP/lat/long stuff before the original launch last year). |
