well thanks, but wait until the launch! ;-)
hopefully I'll head off problems associated with thousands of new users signing up etc, my main worry is multiple scheduler servers to handle the "delivery" of 8MB CPDN apps. The workunits are pretty small at 10KB zip files -- it's the 8-10MB of big climate model download to say 10K users from slashdot that worries me!

there's still some oddities with crashes I think from odd Linux kernels and gcc libraries out there, maybe not "odd" but somehow they're incompatible (it's hard predicting every Linux configuration etc). I try compiling everything possible statically but there's bound to be conflicts etc.

@ Carl. One way to get some control over the situation is too limit the issuance of KEYS. Send so many out per hour via e-mail at a controlled rate. If the systems can handle more speed them up and vice versa. Just an idea.

If this idea flys, also be sure that the people who have requested keys are informed of the delay and the reason for it.

actually dogbytes, that's a pretty good idea, I'll look into it. I was thinking of maybe having something in the scheduler to limit the big app downloads to 1000 per hour (about 10GB of traffic per hour); or I may just setup a bunch of schedulers with apps to deliver (so when a client hits climateprediction.net it will get a random scheduler to load balance).

well (a) we didn't quite manage the traffic of the old CPDN start (we were down a bit) and (b) I think this launch is more "global" and potentially more users (well hopefully!) so I want to be better prepared than the madhouse of last September with the old CPDN launch! :-)

My compliments to the CPDN Team for a great website.

I have just spent time exploring and I have to say there are some great features. I liked the buddy-space feature but I loved the participant locations sections. I hope that 'they' can get the map down to another layer. I loved this idea when I found out that the CERN people had similar on their network.

I also found the project and scientific explanations to be very readable and informative.

Well done.

K.

Maybe it's already implemented, but since the application is split in 4 files, one idea is to get these from 4 different download-servers.

Also, since AFAIK BOINC can have multiple urls for every file to upload/download, it's an idea to list more than one in case one of the download-servers is overloaded/crashes, so instead of constantly re-trying the same it will get the download from one of the others.

Of course, if everything has to go through the same rate-limited line to the internet and it's this limit you'll be hitting, adding more download-servers wouldn't help.
