Who has finished the first sulphur model?
Congratulations!

did i understand correctly that the Sulfur models are a limited set? At the moment I have 2 and the only way it looks like I will complete them has been to change the resource share to 200 (50%) ... not complaining, just curious ... especially with the tight deadlines ...

If you are running 4.36 or later, remember that eventually, the host will enter EDF and NWF and finish the result just in time.

Well, I changed the share to achieve the same effect. Since I only have Sulfur models on two machines it is not a big deal. I was just trying to keep straight what is goind on... I do get confused so easily.

Just had a look and found around 12,000 sulphur work units, many of which have been sent out twice (I think I found ~23,000 resultids).

Carl did mention that about 5000 had been generated and all sent out at one stage and that he would regenerate them. I did wonder whether it would just be the same 5000 WU sent out a second time. Maybe it was, but it seems they have increased the WU to 12000. I am sure they could increase the 12000 further if there were enough machines wanting to run them.

I am sure they will accept work after the deadline, but the hindcast is likely to be more interesting and \"only\" a further 25% longer than sulphur. So after the hindcast is launched, I cannot see many people wanting to start running a sulphur cycle model.

My first thought (just a guess) was that they will not want to spread the sulphur models too thinly. So I would expect the 12000 work units to be reissued several times to try and get those 12000 back rather than issuing lots more work units.

However, I looked and saw they are varying the quite a lot of parameters (at least 14) see for example:
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=1087999

Also, I haven\'t spotted a pattern to the parameters being handed out so this could mean I just haven\'t spotted the pattern or that they are now using a Monty Carlo random distribution. If it is a random distribution then forget what I just said about not spreading them too thinly.

I certainly couldn\'t distinguish a random distribution from Latin hypercube sampling and I have not looked at many parameters sets so there could certainly be repeating patterns.

Well I have probably confused everyone even more rather than clarifying things so I had better stop ;)

Chris,

Um, well, I don\'t think I am any more confused than before. I recall the hindcast ... I was just trying to get straight in my head what all we are going to be doing down stream ...

I mean, CPDN is going to be one of my top projects as I don\'t think we can learn about modeling weather too soon ... so, though it is not a problem for my life, I kinda wanted my great-grand children to not be, um, oven roasted ...

This is one place that BOINC is \"weak\" in that you either do a whole project or multiple applications within the project. But, there is no selection method for the applications. I debated this with Dr. Anderson but as I don\'t do projects he did not seem all that interested in my opinion.

But, here, it would be nice to be able to \"option\", this machine do this application vs. that one ... so, I could sign up on some machines for the longer models as that machine has the capability ... same thing will be true for SETI@Home soon (I hope) with AstroPulse. For SAH I would opt for AstroPulse and no SETI as I think it is a waste of time ... which is why I am de-emphasizing SETI ...

In Sulphur alpha, they set up special preferences to choose which applications to send. (The approach wasn\'t really implemented there as only sulphur units were being handed out.) I liked the idea and would have preferred it if they had continued down that route. No idea whether this hit some snag or whether it was just easier to continue as at present.

An option is for CPDN to set itself up as several different projects, of course. But that is potentially confusing, and a problem for scientists whose priorities may be different from those participants.

It is the way that the time limited coupled ocean spinup will be managed, but that is a special case.

Which was the point I was trying to make to Dr. Anderson (unsuccessfully), in CPDN, it MIGHT be nice to be able to say, this machine can do anything, but, this one don\'t or do these applications.

Again, adding to the participant\'s choices ... as I said, SETI@Home is really pretty long odds, but I like the idea of doing AstroPulse, if and when it comes out ... so, that is another place I would use it ...

Of course, I can always tank SETI@Home ...
