Hi, the initial download is about 10MB (1-2MB for BOINC and 8-9MB for our application). Each workunit is only 10KB. The project will try and send a "trickle" of about 200 bytes daily just to keep us informed of where you are and to generate "incremental credit" (so it looks like you make progress! :-). At the end of each phase there is a "mega-trickle" which is about 1KB (it's the global mean temperature & precip for your world). The final upload is about 6MB, it is spread across 5 zip files. So since a full model run takes about a month, you are looking at less than 20MB of Internet traffic per month. It is "large" -- while it runs it uses up 600MB or so of disk space (a setting which is in our BOINC config, so we skip clients trying to connect that don't have enough disk space or don't want to use as much as we do). At the end of a run it compresses down to 200MB which we would hope for you to leave on your hard-drive in case there is interesting data in the future (since even on a Cray we use it takes 8-10 days to run a full 45-year model), but that is optional. |

so i can opt out of the massive storage of 200MB? i assume it adds 200MB EACH time i do a WU, i very very seriusly do not have that kind of storage to give up each time, so is there any way i can choose to not store that ammount of data untill i can afford to get me a lovely 200GB disk or two? |

well you would need at least 600M to run a full workunit, and then after the upload has gone through you can get rid of the 200MB compressed folder (same name as the workunit) |

> or can i whip it off the drive and onto a cd/cdrw?? That might be the best way to go. It's possible that that somebody is going to be interested in getting further details from the 97% of results you don't return (either by uploading more of the results or by downloading an analysis program, in either case with your agreement). If you've deleted the results your model will have to be run again. Join us here |

well it may not be efficient either, since hard drives are so huge these days and doing 5 runs is about 1GB compressed, we figured that would be OK to donate, but for people with full hard drives they may want to zap things. Another nice bonus of keeping the stuff around is you can "surf" the files with our IDL package or Martin Sykes' cpview program soon (whenever I write the shared memory DLL for both of 'em!) |

Hey Nick, I'm also on dial up, and it's really no big deal. It does take 20 minutes or so to download the model and associated files, but you don't have to sit and wait for it. :) |

ok then, ill try to keep atleast the last 5 results on my PC as that will take X ammount of days for you check things your end and get back to me if you want them! (not sure how long one will take me as i will soon be recieving a nice 2.4ghz mobo & cpu through the post) (anyone have a guestemate with some 256MB 266Mhz memory?) but then i must deleate them....however, i plan to get a TV card and therefor an UBERMASSIVE HD to store films on, then i will be able to give 20GB of storage to Boinc as i would have no need for my 'old' harddrive. ill add you to my boinc then :) |
