I just wanted to know if ther will be any WU\'s that will make use of the 64 Bit version of windows? I have a AMD 64 bit system and have Windows 64 running happy. So I was hoping to get BOINC\'s and/or ClimatePrediction.net to work faster by using the 64 bit CPU/OS power I have?

thanks for reading my Noobie question

The question gets asked every month or so, but the short answer is: Unlikely soon.

If you do a search of these boards, or the php Community forum, you may find one of the long answers.

64 bit applications have been tested on other projects. Although there is a slight increase in speed, it is not significant to produce programs at this point.

These programs use the FPU (Floating Point Unit), which has not significantly changed between the 32 bit and 64 bit processor. So, even though the physical processor would process faster, the high end number processing is still the same. Since the normal processor can not handle the high end floating point needed in processing the numbers, there is no significant gain.

if/when we do a 64-bit version it won\'t be for speed, it will be because the models \"natively\" run in 64-bit. it\'s probably about a year away (and will depend on funding!)

I\'m wishing for a 64bit version too, for the reason Carl states - as it is now, it is not possible to run CPDN (or any other project apart from Seti@home) under a compiled 64bit BOINC in 64bit Linux. The only way to run CPDN is to install the precompiled Linux BOINC which has awful benchmarking (my AMD64 cpu has benchmarks comparable to my XP1700!).

Kenneth

I see. But how about supporting the AMD64 platform by sending the i686 application to AMD64 clients?

Thanks.
