Being the fastest none win98 machine I have. I have set it up to do climate.
It looks like its going to take about 9/10 months to complete 2 wu\'s.
The question is..... is anybody going to be interested in the results in 9 months time. I dont mind leaving it running if the results are going to be useful.
Second question is..... is this a bit slow for a couple of 1 mhz cpu\'s running winnt4 with 512k ram?.

If you have the patience to stick with it, then the results are still likely to be useful to somebody. But the sulphur WUs are a very big task, and 1 GHz is at the bottom end of what is practicable in terms of computing capacity to run them. I\'d recommend regular backups - it would be pretty upsetting to have a crash after several months of patient crunching and lose everything.

One thing to hope for, though, is that BOINC 5.2 is not great at estimating completion times for CPDN. If you are relying on that, try a calculation based on % done and time elapsed - you might just find that gives a more encouraging figure.

Win9x and CPDN Sulphur - I\'ve seen statements that this will most likely not be a success.

The machine nairb is referring to is running Windows NT, which I think will be OK.

I\'m running a sulphur on a 1.4GHz machine which will take about 3 months. I calculate it has another 2 months to finish but boinc manager tells me it\'ll take 5 mths, if that helps. :)

@Andrew : Nairb\'s question was about the Dual CPU NT4 - but he has Win98 machines in the list too.

I run 2x Sulphur plus a mix of other projects on a 2xXeon2200, only 512MB, Win2k Server - without problems and without swapping(!) so far - so NT4/512MB shouldn\'t be a problem at all.

Thanks for the input. I do forget sometimes that win98 does not work, and set a machine up with climate...and of course it fails.
Win NT4 has always worked for me. And being somewhat cheaper(free) that win xp its what I have to play with on dual cpu pcs. I could use linux.....but its not the issue.
1Ghz cpu\'s are fine for the other projects. This is the project for power machines.
There must be something on ebay.....

There was a Cray for sale on ebay about October last year. Not sold though.

Just wondering, What was the minimum bid. :)
Would love to have that cray set up in the back shed.

See here.

But the price didn\'t include shipping. It would need quite a big shed.

Not to mention the foundations and the concrete floor! :)

Well, having suffered a motherboard failure with the dual cpu machine, I decided to look for a Cray on ebay... I found instead a p4 3gig ht thing. A bit cheaper and dosent require a huge extention to the house.
Set the thing up with linux fedora 4, and away we go.

See how far I get this time...... somewhat quicker than the old coppermines!.

Well.... thanks for the info. I dident check if there were any issues.

So, I guess the point is... is there any point in letting this run for a couple of weeks to end in failure. Will it be any use?. Do the models always fail?.

Mmmm ... not sure if its worth continuing or wait until a stable version pops along.

Since you will lose nothing in the process, you may want to try the downgrade to 4.21 that is suggested later in the thread. It should be more stable, and faster on Intel.
