From Paul D. Buck\'s WIKI

General
Message Type: Error Message

This Message means that the BOINC Client Software, Science Application, or Operating System encountered a severe error. It should be noted that these errors may not indicate a specific problem with the software, but may be the result of a confluence of stray interactions that produces, um, a negative effect.

These messages are called \"Stop\" messages for Microsoft Windows®. The messages and common ways to determine what and why these error are happening are in a Microsoft Knowledge Base Article.

Common causes of these errors can be:

Over stressed hardware, usually by heat.
Flaky, or bad device drivers.
An actual problem (Bug) in the BOINC Client Software, Science Application, or Operating System.
A bad Work Unit (usually a rare occurrence).
These errors have been sighted in all BOINC Powered Projects, so, the examples are merely typical occurrences.

Note:
Even though the \"death\" seems to point to one application or another, there is no telling from this message where the error really occurred. The error usually points at the Science Application but may well be something like a device driver.
[edit]Things to Check
You should report your problem to the appropriate board for each of the projects as you may get better help there.

Also you could check various hardware related issues like:

Is your system stable? (see How-To Test Machine Stability)
Is your CPU cooling up to the job?
Is there adequate ventilation inside your case?
Have you checked all fans and cleaned the inside to remove dust buildup? (see How-To Do Basic Hardware Maintenance)
Is the ambient temperature of the room too high?
Can you setup a motherboard monitoring program to look at temperature fluctuations?
Can you swap memory sticks and see if the problem goes away?
Are you \"overclocking\" at all?

Our first line advice to those who have this error is to update the graphics card drivers...if they are not already up to date. This has solved the problem for some people, but not for others. The other things noted in Jim\'s post may also help.

Flaky, or bad device drivers!
Seems to be this as I have gotten two work units that seem to be running OK.
Changed the ADSL modem for one that I purchased although AOL tells me that it is the operating system funny that it should give up the ghost on this one program! every other site downloads OK even using their modem and drivers.
here\'s hopping.
