Most likely because the 6 months of work it would involve wouldn\'t be worth it for the few Itanic systems out there... I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

Projects do not have to be open source. They can do as they wish with their product. We are just users of their product and we follow their rules or leave. Making a 64 bit app has been tried on different projects. It give very little speed increase. Processing is done in the FPU, and since the FPU has not changed significantly from 32 bit processors to 64 bit processors, you just gain the speed of better memory managment, bus speed, etc. The physical FPU time is going to be nearly the same. |

It can\'t be made open source because the code is owned by the Met Office. And I doubt that there would be too many people able to work with a million+ lines of 64 bit Fortran and make it stable on desktops. |

hmhh but maybe someday a 64bit client will be available ? Yes, possibly, but 64 bit isn\'t the same as IA64 (more likely to be x86/64). I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

Why nobody never try to compile a Ia64bit Client for Itanium systhems?? or maybe somone have ?? At SETI and SIMAP are applications for IA64 on HP-UX and Linux available. The BOINC client is avaialable for Linux IA64 and HP-UX on IA64 at the boinc third party site (boinc.berkeley.edu/download_other.php). |
