Some days ago I started my first climateprediction working unit. At the begin I got the following status message at the \"work\"-tab in BOINC: CPU time 0:00:00 Progress 0 % To completion 3340 So I thought it would be finished in 250 days if my Computer is runnig 13 or 14 hours a day. After some days I got: CPU time 107:30:00 Progress 2,16 % To completion 3395 and today: CPU time 113:52:00 Progress 2,29 % To completion 3397 - So the \"time to completeion\" becomes more and more as longer I calculat??? - When 114 hours are equiv. to 2,3 % then I get (with my pocket calculator) that 100 % are equiv. to 4956 hours - or am I wrong??? - When my computer runs 13 hours a day I need 370 days to complet the work unit, so I come behind the deadline - so it is better to stop the work and do something more reasonable work??? |

All the other projects can be completed in a matter of hours, a day perhaps, and BOINC is optimised for this. When it comes to the VERY long times of climate models, it doesn\'t do well at all, with estimates of the finish time. In fact BOINC \'learns\' about the computer and it\'s usage the more models it runs. For climate, this means a year or so to get an accurate estimate. Wait until you\'ve run for a week, and work out your own times by seeing how many model years you got through. Or see how many days it takes to get through 10 model years. And don\'t forget to make regular backups, or you WILL get mad when it crashes. And the deadline is just there because something had to be put in that field. |

Running CPDN on a laptop has been proven to be hard to impossible as the models make the laptop run hot and the CPU slows down. BOINC Wiki |
