Regrettably, I uninstalled BOINC/climateprediction because it is not well set up. It doesn\'t seem to handle gracefully the situation of having a separate admin and user account and it doesn\'t allow me to choose where it will save its data (a big no-no for anyone who wants to regularly image their primary partition and keep data on a separate partition). I\'m a well-informed computer user so I was very disappointed at how BOINC seems to function vis-a-vis the user. It feels like you sign over usage rights to your PC and lose a lot of control. The saddest part is that only in the FAQ/uninstall item do you tell people not to download it to try it out/have a look. That should be on the download page!!! I widh the project all the best but I can\'t afford to have a program like BOINC running on a PC that is mission-critical to my work. |

People having problems with BOINC should post on the BOINC web site in America, not here on the Oxford Uni web site in the UK. |

Allthough the data can not be seperated from the BOINC program, the whole thing can be installed anywhere. BOINC must be installed as an administator to help reduce the instances of unauthorized installs. If you want to run it as a limited user you must set some permissions to allow it. BOINC is designed to be a set it and forget it type thing, so that is probably where you are getting the feeling that there is no control. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

Data backup of BOINC projects while they are running gets files out of synch and would not work, because things are always in a state of change. If you backed up while it was running, and tried to reinstate the data, it would fail, because files would not be up to date. I run it on all my PCs. Nothing has been lost, and I\'ve been doing it for nearly 2 years. My data drive is fine, I can back that up, and never have an issue. The program drive where BOINC runs from is also fine. I have done things from DVD Mastering to web design, to whatever and still do not have any issues with the software. I install as the admin, give the users the rights to the BOINC folder, and away it goes. It runs as a service, so I do not have to be logged in for it to run. It\'s an awesome program. I have been working with computers since the mid 1970s. I have been on the administration/network/virus control/etc. side of things. I have found this software to be well done, and safe. |

This is how I solved Rick\'s problem: install Boinc with the admin account in single user mode, uncheck the option to start automatically after installing. Boinc is installed as the screen saver whether you select that option or not. Select another screen saver after installing. Then move the Boinc entries created in the Start menu (i.e. the Boinc subfolder and the link in the Startup folder) from the administrator account to the corresponding locations of the account in which you want to run Boinc. Now the Boinc program folder must be made writable for this user. Open a command window and type: cacls \"c:\\Program Files\\Boinc\" /t /e /g myuser:f and Boinc will start when you log in as myuser. I created a separate user for Boinc, so it cannot access my other data. If you install a new version, you will have to move the Start menu entries again. |
