Message 2492 - Posted: 1 Sep 2004, 10:18:03 UTC
Last modified: 1 Sep 2004, 10:18:20 UTC

This morning I started my BOINC and received an error message - an error downloading executable files(?!?!). And also, my current project gone with a "Client error" to the server. I tried many resets of a project - every time I received an error with executables. Finally I detached and reattached the project. Here is the last message. Whats wrong?

that's weird I just checked the servers. Are you on a modem? How about some sort of firewall that wouldn't allow redirects? We are using a "mirror" page so requests will go to a random server, but it's possible that your firewall sees the URL change (redirection) and thinks it's "bad" and isn't allowing it? Because it seems to be happening pretty fast for you, i.e. it starts to download and 12:44:40 but also failed 12:44:40 so nothing is coming through.

You're right - it was the firewall. It allowes BOINC to connect only climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk and climateprediction.net. It is pitty because I lost my ID, I have to start a new prject form zero and finally - right now 13 (!!!) projects are assigned to me :( I have no idea if it is possible to remove them from the list.
Nevertheless - thank you for the immediate and appropriate help.

I had the same error msg yesterday, when starting up with the new S@H version 4. It downloaded two files sucessfully, but had the above problem downloading a PDB file, and then just hung.

After resetting the project and then restarting Boinc, it then downloaded everything afresh, and started crunching normally. I suspect the S@H server was having problems or was overloaded at the time.

I fixed the problem allowing the client acting as a browser. I didnt want to do that but I had no choice. May I ask you, Carl, to post a list of all the mirrors? 10x

Well, I'm glad it wasn't just me. I have the same problem. Checksum error.

After several retries, I am apparently at my DAILY QUOTA.

I will assume the problem is on the climateprediction end and await it to be fixed.

Same Problem here. After detaching and reattaching several times I was able to download without checksum error.
But when the client starts to work I get a strange error pop-up-box. The title bar reads: "Visual Fortran run-time error"

and it goes on: "forrtl: severe(17): syntaxerror in NAMELIST input, unit 57, file %boincpath%/projects/climateprediction.net/61h_000032843/jobs/spec3a_sw_3_asol2b_hadcm3"

Does anyone know what this means?

The client stops crunching after this message and hangs at 1 sec. CPU time. :(

Hey,

the same happened here yesterday. I'm running more then 10 PC; all have the same configuration, only differences are WIN2000 WIN XP PROF.

As 9 of 10 machines have downloaded CPDN-workunits without problems in the past, I can exclude, that it has to do something with my local configuration.

It must have to do something with server-side ...

Something is wrong with the download servers.
Checksum errors and messages about garbage URL's.

I am getting this error on windows and linux machines.

edit:
I just eased up on the memory timings on one of the affected PC's and it downloaded without a checksum error.
Looks like it is an issue with overclocking or to tight memory timings.

the "mirror server" at MIT was acting up, so I've taken it off the list. as the boinc download goes to a random server, it's quite possible that one file was trying to get downloaded from MIT when the server was flakey. something to add to the boinc "to-do" list, i.e. retry downloads on an http failure!

That would be great! Otherwise too few models would be completed :)

According to the logs of my firewall the sites BOINC connects are:

163.1.125.20 (cpdn.comlab.ox.ac.uk)
163.1.13.16 (climateapps.oucs.ox.ac.uk)
163.1.13.17 (climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk)
137.108.64.33 (climateprediction.net)
130.246.191.174 (???)
18.172.0.169 (MIT?)

Are the correct and full list? Are there addresses wich are not supposed to be there - 130.246.191.174 for instance?

I had the same issue - tried many times to get a good download, then stopped dead with the same runtime error.

It's not our firewall - it allows everything on port 80, and other machines on the same site installed previously without problems. It's also not a bandwidth issue! - multiple T3s for the pipe and gigabit ethernet inside.
