Boinc.exe is having a long conversation with Google, and is slowly downloading several MB of something.

I am confused, and concerned.

You have your computer(s) hidden, so if you want help, you\'ll have to paste the Messages here so that we can try and work out what is going on.

But BOINC does NOT talk to Google. If you see Google mentioned in the messages, it\'s just because both it and Yahoo are used for a reference, to see if BOINC can talk to the world outside your computer when it\'s having comms problems.

As for \'lots\' of download, this is a big project, with a lot of files, some big, that are needed to create the climate models.

Which have appeared many times before.

My concern is the firewall log:
302136 05/23/2006 16:22:18 Allowed 10 Outgoing TCP www.google.com [216.239.59.147] 05-00-20-00-05-00 80 nn.nn.nn.nnn 00-00-05-00-00-00 3446 G:\\Climate_Change\\boinc.exe Normal 1 05/23/2006 16:21:14 05/23/2006 16:21:14 GUI%GUICONFIG#SRULE@APPCONFIG-TCP#G:\\Climate_Change\\boinc.exe

showing - to my understanding - that BOINC is talking to google. Whilst this activity was going on, several MB was incoming, BOINC seemed not to be talking to any other internet address.

I have closed the BOINC manager now, because I need to change user - BOINC has had the computer to itself for about 4 hours.

I continue to be concerned

If Boinc is having problems talking to the project servers, it\'ll repeatedly query Google / Yahoo just to see if there is a viable network connection. We can see that it\'s not happy from the \'couldn\'t resolve host name\' messages, which means that it\'s having trouble talking to your ISP\'s DNS servers.

You may be better running with \'network activity suspended\' most of the time, and only set it to \'network activity always available\' when you know that the internet is available and the firewall is letting data through.

Boinc can have trouble with the network for the following reasons:

* Firewall (the most frequent problem)
* Proxy servers
* \'Flaky\' connections
* VPNs
* Dialup

I'm a volunteer and my views are my own.
