Hi,
I am a very active participant with BOINC and am running CPDN, SETI & Rosetta. However, CPDN seems to completely hog the resources of my PC as it is such a huge model. I would like to help the Rosetta cause and ideally would like my PC (which is switched on 24 hours a day) to spend about 8 hours a day on each of the three projects.

As I write this, I haven\'t done a Rosetta WU for over a wekk, and I can\'t seem to force the PC to download any WUs (or SETI\'s for that matter) whatever \"Resource Share %\" I set in my preferences.

Why is this? How can I get my PC to run more evenly with my three Projects so that I contribute to each?

Hi Neil,

a single core machine capable of running only single BOINC task would switch according to resource share if:
- each task would finish on time (i.e. before deadline).
- there are no \'long term debts\' (LTD)
LTD can be found in client_state.xml under <long_term_debt> tags.
What are they in your case?

To manually trigger downloading different project WUs, suspend CPDN project until other project WUs are downloaded and then resume CPDN project.

I see that your host never finished a model...perhaps it is worth to solve this issue as well.

My LTD = 2288

I have had two CPDN models crash on me, each after about 120 hours or so. I am now working on my third, but have been backing up my projects folder just in case it happens again.

I would like to move to a dual-core machine soon, but a few people have warn ed me off, becuase I would just like to swap the mobo/CPU/RAM combination and not my HDs, case and PSU. Some people say I can\'t do this, others say I can. Some say BOINC will be fine, others say it won\'t..... :(

LTD is in seconds, so Rosetta is fine, but CPDN and SETI has over 12 hours. It should settle down eventually.

re dual-cores. BOINC should be fine. I have done so several times during my regular updates (went dual-core a years ago on 3 home machines).

Hope you hget stability/sw issue solved so no more model crashes...

Your account shows that you are running Windows XP.
Is this what came with a new system? Or did you upgrade the OS to XP?

If you upgraded you are good for the other upgrades that you mention. If you have the OME Windows XP that came with a system, MS considers it a new computer if you change the MB and needs a new OS. They check this when your OS dues an automatic update.

By your account you are running a P4 2.8 without HT, if this is a socket 478 there are some bargans on faster P4\'s with HT for socket 478, which will not require a new MB or OS. If you have socket 775 there are even faster CPU to upgrad to, and if the board will support a duel core the Pentiun D 2.66 is fast for it\'s rated speed and really cheap.

I agree that a new MB, CPU and memory is the bast way to go but if funds are short for this cansider a newer CPU only.

The P4 2.8 is not a bad system, if you really want a new MB and CPU why not build a whole new system (you can get used cases, HD\'s. ECT.) and then have 2 systems for very little more than upgradeing the one you have.

If you go for all new MB, CPU & Memory the best would be the AMD 64 X2 or the Pentium D. Both are great, just depends on which you like better.

I bought my PC as a \"Music\" PC - to be used for composing music with software such as Cubase SX and various \"software synths\" and effects. These beasts in themselves consume CPUs for breakfast as well as RAM, so a good PC is important for me. I\'ve had mine which was pretty good when I bought it, but now is showing its age.

Anyway, I contacted the shop I got the PC from, and my copy of XP I have is fine for an upgrade. It is OEM, but I do have a Windows disc and they confirmed it is not linked to the BIOS. However, I will need to do a full format & install again. So all seems OK for a new mobo/CPU/RAM combo.

I have taken on-board your other comments, but my current mobo only supports a 533FSB so an HT/478 P4 is not available. I want to keep my current case/PSU/fans/HDs/sound-card/DVD.... and just buy the bare minimum. I am now looking at the forthcoming Conroe (Core2 Duo) CPUs, but for the time being, I may get a 930D system, which can be bought for peanuts!!! AMD dual-cores are great, but I feel that they will soon hit a brick wall in terms of technology, but I do see that they have a dual CPU system for dual-core mobos (4x4) coming out next year, by which time, Intel may have some quick Core2 Duo\'s and maybe even a quad-core CPU themselves.....

Hi all,

Just an update really. I have finally taken the plunge, and this week, I upgraded my system. I kept my case, PSU, hard-drives, DVD and fans and simply purchased a new CPU, mobo, RAM and Graphics Card.
(The system is a dual-core Intel 950D on and Asus P5W-DH mobo, with 2Gb OCZ Platinum XTC PC6400 DDR2 RAM and an Asus EN6600 512Mb Silent Gfx card)
All is going well, and with CPDN, I am running at 1.9s/TS on each core. I also do SETI and Rosetta. SETI is certainly a huge improvement with one WU done in about 4 hours on each core.

On installing XP, I ended up having to telephone Microsoft and they gave me a new Validation Key, so no problems there.
