Hi everyone at CPDN! I\'m a student with some 8 machines crunching BOINC. I move next week into a new place, which unlike my old place, I have to pay for electricity. As a result I still want all of my computers to crunch. My solution is thus: Equip 7 computers on CPDN, and transport them to a place I know where I can get free electricity, but no internet access. After 6/7 months (assuming the WU\'s dont error out), either: a) transport the computers to my place to access the internet, upload all the trickles, then take them back (which would take around half a day to complete), or b) take out the HDD / copy the BOINC directory, put it onto my computer at my new place that has internet access, then upload the trickles. I go to and from both places on foot several times a week (I dont drive), and this would only require my attention for some 10 minutes each time As a result, my question stems from this problem: Which one of these solutions are feasable/would even work? In a perfect world, I\'d like A, but in a pinch I can go for B. All positive comments/solutions welcome =D NB These machines are old, and are predicted to run each WU for around 200-250 days at full pelt. |

Hi, The models really need to access the internet around once per month, so perhaps B) modified appropriately. I wouldn\'t take out the HDDs, but just copy onto a large USB key or CD-R and copy off when you\'re on the internet-connected machines. I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. Wouldnt that be a problem based the WUs are assigned to a different machine? (just thought of this) |

Shouldn\'t be a problem, I think other people do this too. I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

Shouldn\'t be a problem, I think other people do this too. The way to do this: Stop crunching. Copy the ENTIRE directory structure onto a CD key. Start crunching. Don\'t do this for the final report. On the machine with Inet connection. Stop crunching. Start crunching from the CD Key. Do the connection to CPDN. This will report and possibly get a new task. Stop crunching from the CD Key. Start crunching. If this was a final report with a download, take the CD Key back to the crunching machine. Copy the ENTIRE directory structure from the CD key back to the HD. Start crunching.
