I have a question regarding the copyright status of the BOINC-CPDN client software. Under what license would one be allowed to use screenshots of the running client? One version is uploaded at Wikipedia, stating that it is copyrighted software, but possible to use under terms of fair use. -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CPDN_BOINC.png

Would it also be possible to put these screenshots under a creative commons-license or something evenly less restricted? This would open the door for other language versions of Wikipedia to use the image, because they usually don\'t have a \"fair use\"-law. Anyone with any ideas on this??

Firstly I\'m not a lawyer nor associated with the project in any official capacity, so this is just a \'common sense\' interpretation. Without prejudice, e&oe, etc.

The \'copyright message\' sounds like generic padding from Wikipedia. If you have issues with it I think you should contact Wikipedia in the first instance.

The software itself is copyright and can only be distributed under the agreed license (i.e., to be used in Boinc etc). However, I don\'t think this is relevant, since you\'re talking about screenshots. AFAIK the graphical output of the software is not copyright, just the software itself, and the input climate data. So I don\'t see that putting screenshots into the Wiki would be a problem under any jurisdiction. My non-laywer answer would be that no license is required for screenshots.

I note the caption is incorrect, although in a minor way : It reads \'Climateprediction.net v5.4.9 running under Boinc\' or words to that effect, whereas it should read \'Climateprediction.net v5.15 running under Boinc v5.4.9\' (or perhaps v5.08).

An alternate screendump you might want to use is here:
http://bbc.cpdn.org/forum_thread.php?id=4408&nowrap=true#24725

Which is one I took when the model was a single timestep away from completing. You\'re welcome to use it for any purpose (but don\'t link to it directly, take a copy and link to that).

I imagine that the Oxford team will be pleased to see images used to give information about the project, but not pleased if they are used for commercial purposes.

Obviously a Wiki page about cpdn in any language is better with images.

Thanks for the answers. I\'m a Wikipedia author myself and was thus asking out of this perspective. I assumed that the program was copyrighted, but am unsure about the graphical output. I know that for example computer games screenshots are prohibited to freely redistribute, even non-comemrcially, without explicit permission. On the other hand, my climate model is definitely unique (as are all of ours), but have no clue on how this might change something, if anything.

Has one of you any idea how I can contact the Oxford team to find our more about this? I am participating at CPDN for more than a year now, but apart from watching the website news from time to time and sending my trickle up messages, I am hardly involved with the project in any deeper sense.

Contact with the Oxford people is either when they happen to look through these boards, which isn\'t often, or via the admins and mods.
I\'ll post a message, but it may be a while, as they\'re usually busy with \"University life\".

our policy has typically been as long as we\'re given full credit & the URL than it will be OK, such as this guy\'s blog that uses our graphics: http://www.marklynas.org/

Would you agree to release one certain image (best would be http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:CPDN-Client.png) into the public domain, so that it can be used for free, without the possibility for others to alter it or use it in any commercial way? The best solution for this would probably be the following Creative Commons license:

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/

Since the name of the project, including the URL, are included in the image I think this is very close to your ideas about using the image on the web.

Carl means that you can use any model image for free, as long as you quote climateprediction.net. This appears in the image anyway, so there\'s no problem. It would be a good idea to include a link under the image to
