Message 25714 - Posted: 22 Dec 2006, 16:03:06 UTC

On 12/18 and 12/19/06, both of the models I was running crashed, and since then I have not received any new tasks, nor have the existing models tried to restart (that I know of). I tried resetting the project, but to no avail.

I\'m not sure why the models terminated, although looking at the graphs from the trickles, it is interesting to see the mean temperature is at the low extreme of all the models returned. I checked my anti-virus, and it did run on 12/20/06 at 2:15pm EDT, but I think that was well after the crashes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!
Jon

The link to the relevant machine is here:
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/results.php?hostid=40457

Both stopped with an \'exit code 0\'. You didn\'t shut down the task via Task Manager by any chance? Alternatively, did you get a message when Windows was shutting down?

The main thing I can suggest is takig a backup at intervals, I do it weekly or so. If a crash occurs, then you can resume from the backup. Take a look at the various README links in the following location:

The simplest backup method is here:

Regarding the difficulty downloading a new model:
* Do you run multiple boinc projects? If so, it could be Boinc balancing out the time it\'s given to various projects (\'long term debt\').
* Do you have \'no more work\' written in italics adjacent to the project name? If so, then click the \'allow new work\' button.

I think you\'re right about the \"long term debt\" - I do have other projects I\'ve subscribed to, and none of them have run since I started the climate prediction models. When I started climate prediction, two models downloaded immediately, and then all other work was stopped because my PC was \"overcommitted\".

As for the terminations - I\'m now recalling that my PC locked up, and I had to power down the PC to unlock it one night last week, but I\'m not sure that explains the separate crashes, 1 day apart. Looks like I\'ll need to start backing up!

Thanks!

Message 26318 - Posted: 23 Jan 2007, 16:19:23 UTC - in response to Message 25715.

My problem is similar to Jon\'s.

A work unit \"finished\" and uploaded (but there was a problem during the upload, it tried to upload twice or something).

Anyway, since then I haven\'t gotten any new work. If I choose update, the message is \"(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks)\"

The other project I participate in still downloads work units so I am not over committed (I have seen that before - just not right now). Is it possible that the \"other\" project simply doesn\'t leave enough time for climate prediction units (not actually in debt, just forward looking for time). Should I have the other project not download any new work to see if this takes care of itself?

Jim

Jim,

Get a program like BOINCView or BOINCDebt. I am betting that CPDN ran so much it gain too much debt, and now the other project(s) need to pay off their time before you can get a new CPDN.

Very likely exactly as Pooh Bear says. When your PC was originally \'overcommited\', it would have been giving extra time to the CPDN model in order to get it finished before the deadline. This time is repaid to the other projects by \'long term debt\', which means that they get an extra share temporarily. Once they\'ve caught up then things will be even again, and Boinc will allow CPDN to get an extra work unit.

I have seen that almost any multi-project host will give CPDN some extra CPU time in the course of running the model. If for no other reason because the model is there when the host has trouble getting tasks from other projects.

Thanks for the explanation of debt. I am pretty certain that is what is going on - without trying any of those utilities - because the other project I run had server problems. I have a higher weighting for the other project, and it never ran for at least a few days (ran out of work).

In that case I can probably even roughly figure out when the debt will be paid (although I might look into those utilities anyway.

Thanks again,

Jim
