I joined this month and the task size looked overwhelming, but I figured what the heck. I had to suspend once while I was working with photoshop and it was very slow. I had logged about 95 hours on the assigned task and had just passed 2%. When I checked in a few hours later, it looked like it all started over and I was back at zero. Did everything get dumped ? Or did the info I had get retrieved by the project ?

The model uploads at the end of each model year, so the work you\'ve done has been picked up by the server.

I was having a look at see what caused it to crash, it exited with an exit code -1. Curiously it seemed to have trouble doing one of those uploads I just mentioned ... how much free disk space do you have while photoshop is running?

I would make several suggestions:

Before using photoshop or another intensive programme (either memory or graphics), right-click on the \'B\' icon and select \'suspend\'. This puts the model into hibernation while the machine is busy.

Just before shutting down Windows, right-click on the icon and select \'exit\'. This closes it down before the Windows shut down process can kill the task (tends to happen if the PC has a lot of stuff running at the time).

Thanks Mike; Free disk space varies on the photoshop project I\'m working on.
A 100 meg file proceeds at a glacial pace, smaller is better obviously.
The computer is an HP cheapie and the HD operates at 5400 rpm.
I have 768 RAM I think and it has a 30 gig HD with about 7.5 free space.
Nothing was running when the upload took place unless I left my XM radio link on while I was away. I usually don\'t bother shutting down Windows unless I have to reboot. When I did try to suspend the program I clicked on the \"suspend\" button, which might have created the problem.

There are a number of different ways of suspending, and some are better than others (use the one on the project tab, or the one in the activity menu).

But none of them should lead to a project crash.

If working on a huge file in photoshop it may have starved the system of memory, actually exiting rather than just suspending may be a good idea. (To resume, run the Boinc manager again).

I right-click on the process in task manager on XP, and set the priority to LOW when I need the machine for other things. If you do this, don\'t ever set it to real-time!

The priority is set at the lowest possible level by default. There\'s no need to do this manually.

The main cause of problems is insufficient ram.
And with the latest version of BOINC, this is guaranteed to crash models on all projects, as the new version checks for available resources all the way through the crunching.
