Kenneth, yes, it\'s great news, offers a little for everyone.

Sorry to hear you\'re leaving for a while but glad to hear you\'ll be back. Like they say, a change is as good as a rest, no shame at all. Put your \'puters to work where they work best. With so many projects these days it\'s not hard to find one that\'s just right for you.

In the meantime, there are lots of folks who find CPDN is perfect for them and more new people join everyday. Not all of them stay but some do. I know I\'ll be here for a while so don\'t you worry about taking a break. We\'ll get through these long models one way or another.

Dagorath,
I thank you for your kind words but wonder why my actions don\'t make me a \"kook and whiner\" too - I\'m completely in agreement with sTrey that this project needs shorter work units to keep me and other crunchers here. Why the difference? If only you would act as civilly to everyone here, as you do to me...

And with that said, I think we should just let this thread rest in peace.

If anybody wants to respond to my previous post but feels doing so would only take this thread further off-topic or lead to further flames or any other undesirable consequence then address your response to my email address, dagorath at shaw dot ca. I cannot promise all mail will receive a response but I can promise all will at least be read and given sincere consideration.

Carl, I hope everyone will join me in thanking you for your taking the time to reply to the thread -- and for all the hard work.
On a lost message, I said I was hopeful for a shorter WU.
I wasn\'t into flaming or anything.
I just don\'t like losing losing a work unit for avoidable reasons, and I think one of them is how many other things change while you\'re running one unit.

To sum up my CPDN experience:
My XP machines have never minded shutdowns, power failures, me pulling the plug or whateve (even a power supply burnout).
But I\'ve been bitten twice with updating BOINC, following advice that I should do so. (on the forums and in the GUI)
I\'ve been able to tweak a backup on the second glitch. See here, which gives me the feeling exiting BOINC may be a problem (perhaps something to do with the write to disk parameter).
I\'ve just had an issue with a new laptop using Vista -- logging off when I wanted to switch users -- which destroyed the model.
As it was only five days old, I let it go.
I\'m going to test solutions for Vista.
There is the possibilty of going back to an earlier version of files.
Also, I\'ll try to see how it can be run as a service with Vista.

What I would like:
A page with info on developments.
A page with dos and don\'ts (if it ain\'t broke, dont\' fix it).
A page with what the new results are doing with the different parameters.
A page with info on tweaking the XML files. (The info is scattered around and incomplete)
And the link for the forum search in my signature built into the forum pages.

I hope I\'m not being offensive to anybody.
And I don\'t mind helping.

A page with info on developments.

The government doesn\'t release budget details until budget day/night.
This project doesn\'t release details of it\'s plans until they are ready, because it\'s possible that they may not eventuate .
A case in point is 64 bit models. They have been tried a few times over the last couple of years, and it didn\'t work out for various reasons.

A page with dos and don\'ts (if it ain\'t broke, dont\' fix it).

The 4 READMEs here provide links to all that\'s usually needed.
If there\'s anything that\'s been missed, just ask.

A page with what the new results are doing with the different parameters.

Some of this has been documented on the Message board.
Further info could be provided if people start a discussion there.

A page with info on tweaking the XML files. (The info is scattered around and incomplete)

This is usaully not needed, and can cause problems if people assume that anyone can do it if it\'s in a \"How-To\".

And the link for the forum search in my signature built into the forum pages.

These forums are BOINC based, so it\'s something that should be asked of the BOINC developers.
The keyword search on the Questions and answers title page works for all except number strings.

Les, thanks for your reply.
Regarding the search link. It doesn\'t have to be a tweak of the forum system.
It could be inserted in the list on the left, or at the top next to the search site box.
For developments, just some news.
For results, the page that is linked to the home page is two years old, and shows results from classic. So, again some news.
The readmes: another useful link to add on the home page.
Editing the files. It\'s just that it helped me once and used to be talked about much more. That is something for the forums.
To sum up, I was just trying to think of ways to make it easier to access useful stuff and news.

The front page still shows Classic because some people are still running it.

Developments: You could join the beta testing; there\'s been constant changes to the models, and messages about what\'s happening.
And Carl has recently posted in this thread about the memory requirements for the various Met Office models, as used in cpdn models past, present, and in development.
But no information on what is being talked about among the core team is available. Patience is the only answer here.
Generally though, none of the mods can help you with what\'s going on \"on the inside\".

But as it\'s only for a few, and not for scientific but educational pupose, with useless results by now, it should imho move to some hidden area, or at least the update, and state just the numbers from the time it became futile sciencewise.
With an ongoing update of the numbers the impression is maintained, that it\'s still a valid program to run outside the restricted classes in Oxford.

See this sticky.

I personally like the long units. It gives me a real sense of accomplishment when I finish them. I have done several every since I started. Now that I have my first Core 2 Duo, it really runs fast. I also do other projects. So my older P4 machines take around 250 days, and the Core 2 Duo will take about 80 days. If smaller models come, I hope there are options to keep the longer units for those of us who are comfortable with them.

When I mentioned the results from classis, Imeant what you can see when you click on results on the left. That\'s where I\'d like to see more news and links.

Here is an update on developments are far as the modelling done via CPDN; in order of which they will happen over the next two years. Some are in the \"proposal\" stage so may not come to anything if the reviewers & funding bodies don\'t fund it, I\'ll put a (P) for those:

1) optimized (CPU & file I/O) HadCM3L model to come out of beta testing soon (1-2 months)

2) 80-year workunits to redo some of the more interesting results of the BBC experiment with different forcings (a 1920-2000 and 2000-2080). These workunits would use (1) and probably happen in 1-3 months.

3) I think we\'ll be doing another experiment or two with the HadAM3 model (9-times higher resolution model from the Seasonal Attribution Experiment)

4) regional model (UK MetOffice PRECIS Programme HadRM3 model, see http://www.precis.org.uk) embedded with the HadCM3L global model (which generates the boundary conditions for the region). We\'ll probably do regions of southern Africa and US Pacific Northwest and work with scientists from those area ((P) -- Microsoft is hopefully going to fund this, I\'m going to Seattle with Richard Jones of the MetOffice for meetings next week).

I find this project very exciting (and I hope Microsoft does :-) as it will allow scientists from countries that don\'t have a lot of computer resources to take advantage of setting up experiments with CPDN, having the huge CPU power thanks to the participants, and then being able to use data they would otherwise never have been able to get.

5) high-resolution global modelling, with the latest generation MetOffice model (HadGAM1). this is at 4 times the resolution (i.e. \"half\" the hadcm3 resolution, but not quite as high as HadAM3)

The experiment is led by William Ingram of the MetOffice (and Oxford too now) to do an in-depth study of cloud feedbacks within the model (i.e. the positive & negative feedbacks of clouds on the climate etc). The modelling code is quite a bit different, and we are keeping things in 64-bit for the first time, so it could take a gigabyte of RAM to run, as well as a 64-bit PC!

6) HadCM3 but use a higher resolution ocean with hopefully no flux corrections (P)

7) amongst the modelling, a big part of the project work will be getting the results online for scientists (Milo is doing a lot in this area as Tolu & I tend to get bogged down on the BOINC client/modelling side).

So you can see (as ever) there are a lot of apps on CPDN!

Thanks Carl.

We all know how busy you are but giving an outline of future plans is really useful, especially as many people take the end of the BBC involvement as the end of the project.

Hi Rob

Most of that idea came from the programme the Beeb put out on the telly. It did not help that most of the crunchers did not visit the forum. But as by nor leave, we are coming over here one by one as our models finish. This can only help with the research and our own peace of mind, in helping to go forward.

Carl,

Once again you have brought good news and a little something for everyone. An app for everyone and an app on every computer. Hope meetings with Microsoft go well. They would be a most powerful ally if they can be won over.

Mavau, the best place to find project and other news in a single thread is in the top section here, alongside the READMEs:

http://www.climateprediction.net/board/index.php

When Carl gives me the go-ahead, I\'ll probably put his post up above about planned developments into the News section too.

I agree with you about updating the cpdn website. The current problem is that Sylvia used to keep it up to date, but she\'s still on maternity leave and I\'m not sure whether this is still her job.

Sorry I took a bit of time before thanking you all for the effort in offering a lot of updated information in both forums.
I think the news and announcements thread is great. My point in the conversation was it would be nice to have the links on the left here.
Cheers, Maurice

Hi Maurice

Yes, I realise this is what you meant and agree with you. My previous post explains why the cpdn website isn\'t being updated as often as it should.
