Hello...

I\'ve run my model for the last 6 days, but it has only finished 1%. At this rate, I\'ll need 600 days (close to two years)... should I bother continuing with this model? I\'ll likely run much past the deadline...

I thought my computer ran a lot faster last time I did one.

The current models are a lot longer than the older slab models, at 160 years.
But, unlike the slab models, these have a new philosophy:
Upload the data as the model progresses, and don\'t save anything at the end.

The model is actually in 2 parts: the first is a Hindcast, and the second is a Forecast.

A small amount of data is uploaded at the end of each model year, (4th Decamber)
Plus a larger amount each 10 years, (as a 5MB zip file)
And a restart dump every 40 years.

So, there is a case for continuing, however slowly.
Getting halfway, (to the end of the Hindcast), for instance will be a big help.

Hi Sirius

Your computer has plenty of memory, which is more critical for these models than sheer speed, so that\'s good. Disable the screensaver and the model will speed up a bit. You can still see your globe when you want using the button in boinc manager. When you have to exit from boinc to turn the computer off, do this just after a model checkpoint ie shortly after timestep 432. That will save your computer from repeating a lot of crunching.

When the cold weather comes, you can leave the computer on more of the time and turn the room\'s space heating down or off.

There\'s advice on running the models in the READMEs in the Windows section. Look at the Running the model README - the top tips. And in the README about avoiding model crashes, item #1 by Les and #5 by Mike.

Don\'t worry about the deadline because cpdn ignores it. Your computer probably SEEMS slower this time because the current models have more timesteps for each model day. They\'re producing more data.

i have a problem. I can\'t see the countdown of steps until checkpoint... does everyone else have the same problem, or is it just something with mine?

I see it by selecting \"Show Graphics\", then keying Z to remove the grey panel to the left of the globe, then 8

Does that work? I know that some people using different systems can\'t do this :-(
