Since I upgraded to Vista I have problems with the recovery of a backup.
After replacing the old BOINC directory, Boincmanager does not show the projects anymore and Boinc could not communicate with the CPDN server.
I reinstalled Boincmanager, however this resulted in abandoning running projects. I tested this a few times to be sure; so I started and quit e few projects. (sorry for that!)
Please, advise.

Sounds like a pemissions and/or firewall problem.
A few questions:
Where is BOINC installed?
What are the permissions for the directory?
Do you run as an administrator?
Is BOINC allowed through the firewall?
Why did you have to recover from a backup?

The only problem I had with Vista was logging off without stopping BOINC first. I haven\'t had any problems since, even though auto updates logged me off twice, so I suppose the shutdown process has been improved by the hotfixes. And I completed my first model on Vista yesterday.
However, there may be permissions problems when installing Boinc in the program files folder. I have full permissions set for administrators and my main user on the BOINC folder and climate_prediction subfolder. I\'ve also given ordinary users full control on the BOINC folder, but the permissions have not been inherited for the subfolders, which is probably why BOINC manager doesn\'t work for my other users.
I\'ll check and let you know.

Further: I used Total Commander as file transfer manager for replacing the BOINC dir.

Boinc has to be able to get through the firewall, otherwise it can\'t communicate with the project servers.

Vista is not nice about some programs under Program Files. I installed BOINC in a separate directory. It works well.

Being an \"Administrator\" means NOTHING in Vista. Things are still locked down. In order to stop and start BOINC as a service, I have to tell Vista to run Command as Administrator, even though I am already one. Quite quirky.

Yeah. I have BOINC installed in c:\\boinc rather than c:\\program files\\boinc and have not had any major trouble with it.

I also turned off automatic updates. It prompts me for download and then I do it manually. I\'ve had my XP box set up like that since I got it and I\'m more comfortable with it that way.

It is getting worse, although the Boinc programs have now permission through the firewall.

This morning twice a CPDN project was started and stopped because of an unrecoverable error for result hadcm3inct_cmon_1920_160_35869603_2 (Can\'t link input file.

Other remarkable messages were:
- File hadcm3trans_5.40_windows_intelx86.exe exists already, skipping download
...
- Output file hadcm3inct_cmon_1920_160_35869603_2_1.zip for task hadcm3inct_cmon_1920_160_35869603_2 absent
...
- Message from server: Completed result hadcm3inct_cmon_1920_160_35869603_2 refused: result already reported as error
....
- Message from server: No work sent
- Messsage from server: (reached daily quota of 2 results)
- Deferring communication for 15 hr 59 min 7 sec
....
- Couldn\'t delete file projects/climateprediction.net/ SULPC_OXIDANTS_19_A2_1990.mod.gz
- Couldn\'t delete file projects/climateprediction.net/ spec3a_lw_3_asol2c_hadcm3.gz

I do not allow new CPDN projects now. World Community Grid projects run without any problem.
My conclusion is that I have to reinstall Boinc in a new directory c:\\boinc.

Install in a new spot.

To keep your information, do the following:
Stop BOINC
Uninstall (under control panel, add-remove programs)
Install in new directory, do not let it start up
Copy old directory over, so your account information all comes back
Start up BOINC

It will hopefully run a lot better for you.

regarding Vista updates, I had the same setup as yours on my XP machine.
I was happily surprised at first (February through March) at how Vista was able to change a lot of things without having to reboot so I forgot to change the setting.
Since Vista\'s update policy seems to be the same as XP, changing the update setting to prompt should save a lot of problems. (Could someone put it in a sticky?)

about running as an administrator: I think that what happened when I installed BOINC on my new machine was that Vista created the necessary permissions for the current user and group in the program files subfolder. I\'ve had a few issues with permissions with other programs but not with BOINC.

I\'m not familiar with Total Commander. I had an issue where I had to recover from a backup on XP. There is a lot of info on the Climate Prediction Board .
My problem model had reported an error but it was able to complete.
The \'result already reported as error\' may be a new feature.
Do try Pooh Bear\'s method. What I would also do is take notes of the security settings first. And see if there are any differences.

This message started appearing at about BOINC version 5.8.*, as a result of tightening criteria for returned WUs. This happened way back, last year sometime.

There are numerious posts on all our boards about ignoring it. With THIS project, error messages don\'t affect the data that\'s returned, because this is (currently), the only project that returns data all the way through the WU (model).

Not allowing automatic updates from MS is another thing that has been advised about about here, for several years now.
This is because auto updates also involves auto re-boots. Re-booting without first exiting from BOINC is a well know cause of a lot of model crashes, because, with a lot of computers, the Manager doesn\'t get enough time to shut down the many files used by the climate program.

This is MUCH worse with Vista, because one of it\'s \"great\" features is that it shuts down faster. (READ: Can crash a model faster. :( )

I followed the advise of Pooh Bear and it worked ok. (I would never dare to copy the old dir over the new one)
In the meantime the first two trickes have been uploaded; made my first backup and off we go with a speed of 1.62 Tr/sec.....

FWIW:
Whether under Vista or XP, for anyone with the option to have boinc in its own Partition, it\'s the way to go. Defrags (recommended) go a LOT faster than when CPDNboinc is on C:\\.

With that setup, my machines with standard Hard Discs require a minute or two for Defrag, as opposed to the better part of an hour for C:\\; the two boxes with 10,000 RPM Raptor drives do it in seconds.
