OK the website\'s been down for several days...we\'ve had heavy floods in UK...Wimbledon is just starting and I\'ve been waiting to upload a completed model...anyway now it\'s back up and I have downloaded a new model called \'UK Met Office HADSM3 Slab Model 5.06\'.

It is predicted to complete in 381 hrs while my other model is a HADCM3 Coupled Model Experiment Optimised File I/O 5.4 lasting 2000+ hrs.

Is this a new idea to provide smaller models? Has there been a massive change at the server?

Cheers

There\'s now a choice of models - the same 160-year models as before or these shorter slab models that some of us had been testing on beta.

Anyway that you can get small models -- one of my PC\'s needs about a year to complete meaning that it will consume all BOINC-time for the last half or so. A shorter model would be desirable

Go to \"Your account\" link, and change the climateprediction.net preferences to only download \"UK Met Office HADSM3\" models. This will be applicable to all your PCs as new models are downloaded.

Well actually I have only done 160 year models in the past. I went to \'Your Account\' on climateprediction.net and I have two options available, neither of which I had checked.

1)UK Met Office HADSM3 45 yrs
2)UK Met Office HADCM3 80 years

My last model was hadcm3ohe_1pku_05728144_1 and that lasted 160 years.

So this suggests that during the recent server downtime there has been a change of model size. Instead of 160 years you can either get 80 years or 45 years and if you don\'t choose then it is 45 years by default.

Any comments?

Both of these models were until recently, being beta tested.
The 45 year models were released before the server upgrade, and are a revisit of the original slab models. (Experiment 1, here.)

The 80 year models are from the much talked about \"40 year restart dumps\", created during the running of the full 160 year models.

I posted somewhere some time back, possibly in News and Announcements, about the release of the slab models, and again what they were for.

The new option appeared just before the server problem, but most people wouldn\'t have found this before it happened. (And it was just co-incidence; the down time was to copy the databases to big new scsi HDs.)
Also, before this option, it was a random choice as to which model was sent to a user. It still is, if one isn\'t selected.
More info is being written, and will appear on the php OU board.

Note the program name: SM = slab model (ie, no ocean) CM = coupled ocean model.

Just to clarify, I\'m sure Les meant slab model (ie, non-coupled ocean or simple ocean).
