I couldn't find a similar problem with the search so I posted this. My new work unit ran for about 9 minutes and then this happened: I restarted BOINC and the same happened again after the 9 minutes. Is this a problem with BOINC 4.07 (can't use 4.05), WinME or what? |

Just use Boinc 4.05 and read the message that is everywhere at the top of each page: "Notice: Unfortunately a problem in generating workunits occurred over the past few days, so incorrect Fortran namelist files were sent. If your new run crashed immediately, this is most likely why. Please 'Reset' the project to re-'Attach' and you should get a correct workunit. Sorry for the inconvenience!" Btw, why can't you use 4.05? if it was due to the same problem, it should be solved by now. If you are an Alpha tester, you're telling it to the wrong board. ;) -------------------- Jordâ„¢ |

I read that message before I joined this project and I got the impression that the problem had been solved and all new WUs would work just fine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that produces the "severe (17) namelist error", not the one I had. > Btw, why can't you use 4.05? if it was due to the same problem, it should be > solved by now. Somehow I doubt this fortran stuff has anything to do with BOINC. It smells like a CPDN problem. And no, I'm not an alpha tester. :) |

Yes, BOINC 4.05 is not old-fashioned Win98 compatable. But 4.07 doesn't seem to be official version - not for CPDN but also doesn't seems for SETI nor LHC. You might no be able to run BOINC Alpha with current CPDN... Have your checked your other specification like CPU, RAM etc? |

You might no be able to run BOINC Alpha with current > CPDN... As far as I know, only the major version should matter: 3.xx isn't compatible with 4.xx, but any 4.xx is compatible with any 4.xx. Of course this alpha could be filled with bugs and not compatible with others with the same major version number. Maybe I should try to find this 4.06 somewhere. > Have your checked your other specification like CPU, RAM etc? Yes. My computer meets the criteria. I'm a little suspicious about the OS though. They say that WinME is OK but 98 isn't. Which is wierd since they are basically the same product. |

No, it's not necessarily the BOINC client that's incompatible with Windows 98, it could well be the CPDN 4.03 cruncher client that is. So until you see a message that Win98 is compatible for this project, just don't try it. No matter the BOINC client, you are still downloading and using the 4.03 CPDN client. BOINC is only the shell. Until that time, use the CPDN classic client. -------------------- Jordâ„¢ |

I think you have misunderstood me Jord. I have Windows ME, not Windows 98. I just couldn't understand what's so different in WinME that it's the only "Win98" that works with BOINC-based CPDN. I have to confess that CPDN is a kind of "rainy day"-project for me. I only run it when I can't run Predictor. This does not mean that I won't finish the WUs I have started however. So the old CPDN is out of the question. |

Ah, but 4.05 does work on Windows Millennium. It's Windows 98 and 98SE that do not work with BOINC (or better said, the other way around, BOINC doesn't work on that OS). So why the need to run 4.06 or 4.07? Besides that they are Alpha & Beta releases, so any problem you have with them, we can't officially help you with. ;) Just uninstall the old BOINC version you had, that includes 3.2x You can also try to delete all contents of the BOINC directory you are running from. Then reinstall 4.05 and attach with that. Merge your computer accounts in Your account and you should go on a happy trail. Yet if you do not at that time, then please leave behind what error you ran into. That's the only way we can help you. -------------------- Jordâ„¢ |

So why the need to run 4.06 or 4.07? I read this at the Seti@home site : August 30, 2004 We are investigating the Win98 hang/crashing issues in this Thread Please check it out for any updates. NOTE: This bug puts your machine in a state that causes you to reset your machine in order to be able to use it, this in turn can cause disk corruption. We recommend that you hold off executing BOINC on Win98 and WinME until this issue is resolved. I haven't read the whole magnum thread mentioned there, so the warning for WinME might be false, but it's really getting late so I think I'll leave it for tomorrow. |

Usually you can lump windows 95, 98, 98se, and me together and call it windows 9x. BOINC versions 4.01 to 4.05 have problems with windows 9x these problems are fixed in 4.06 and 4.07. If you are running any of these operating systems you should go to the alpha site and get the latest version (4.07), if you are running a different OS you should wait until it is released in case there are other problems lurking that have not been found yet. CPDN requires a dll that is not available in windows 95, 98, and 98se. So it will not run on those operating systems at this time. Later versions of hadsm may work and I would expect Carl to make an anouncement when a compatible version is released. I hope I've made things clearer now and not just confused things more.
John Keck -- BOINCing since 2002/12/08 -- |

Well, since WinME was a cross breed between Windows 2000 and Windows 98, I would expect the DLL file to be there. It had all the networking of Win2k and all the gaming options of Win98. So what DLL file is it about? -------------------- Jordâ„¢ |

I have found more threads concerning this matter here and here. Seems like WinME is the culprit. Edit: Third one |

Thanks, I have a WinME machine running with difficulties as well. I'll try some of your suggestions later today! // Brian Uitti, Project Blue Book Team |

You probably won't be able to run CPDN on your WinME machine yet. Someone had success with the 4.06 version of BOINC, but he seems to be the only one. Besides, finding this particular version might be difficult since the download link mentioned in one of the threads doesn't work anymore. Hopefully Carl gets the problem fixed this week. |
