Hello Yo-Yo Welcome to you in Romania. Friends have told me that the Carpathian mountains are very beautiful but also wild with bears and wolves. You have one 80-year climate model which is probably already running. These are long models; you probably need at least two or three months to complete this task! If you click on the boinc icon at the bottom right of your screen, your Boinc manager will open up. You should see the name of your model in the Tasks window and the project name, ClimatePrediction, in the Projects window. Here is some important advice: * In the Projects window, highlight (=click on the name) \'ClimatePrediction\' and then click the No new tasks button ONCE only. So CPDN will not send you extra models (one is enough). * Do NOT click the Reset project button in the Projects window, and in the Tasks window do NOT click the Abort button! You would lose your model! * Every model year about 5 December (model time, not tomorrow!) your model will want to send a data trickle to Oxford. When you connect to the internet your model will send the trickle. You do not need to connect to the internet every day - the trickles can wait. * Before you shut down the computer, you should first open the Activity menu in boinc manager and select Suspend activity. In the File menu you should then select Exit to exit from Boinc manager. The Boinc icon will disappear from your screen; you can then shut down the computer. * When you restart your computer you will need to open the Start menu, find Boinc manager and click on it to open Boinc manager again. In the Boinc Manager Activity menu you will need to select Run always or Run based on preferences. The model will then start running again. Good luck with your model. What is your second project? If you have any problems, post again and ask. Mo Cpdn news |

I new to the climate and i have a question. As far as better performance for bonic projects, what would be the best upgrade? More ram, faster processor? Something else? |

jayw900, Your current PC has about 1 GB RAM, which is plenty for the \'coupled\' models (CM) and slab models (SM), but low for the \'seasonal attribution project\' models (AM). Given adequate memory, then a faster processor will be the better option, though more memory does make it easier to run other applications at the same time as CPDN. Iain |

Going from single-core to dual- or quad-core makes a huge difference, although that does then put the memory under more pressure (because you\'d have two or four models running at the same time, rather than one). Avoid Vista. I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

Another question regarding cpu\'s. Is the amd athlon 64 x2 6400 interchangeable with the athlon 64 3500? It depends. If the 3500+ is socket AM2, then the 6400+ can fit into the socket. But you need to check your motherboard and power supply out. Some AM2 motherboards may not have support for the 6400+, and some power supplies which might be fine for the 3500+, may not handle the 6400+. |

Thank you for answering my questions, i have another. Can i choose what climate models i run or is it whatever is downloaded Yes, in \"Your account\" (link in blue box on the left of this page). Then, click on \"View or edit\"; you get three choices: climateprediction.net preferences control resource share and customize graphics View or edit "We have met the enemy and he is us." -- Pogo Greetings from coastal Washington state, the scenic US Pacific Northwest. |

Is the amd athlon 64 x2 6400 interchangeable with the athlon 64 3500? Looking at a couple of web sites for info, the 3500 appears to be a socket 939 processor, whereas the 6400 is an AM2 socket processor. So they are NOT interchangable. And this sitesays: If you currently run a Socket 939 Athlon 64 and fancy an upgrade to AM2 then you\'ll need to buy a new motherboard and CPU as well as DDR2 memory in which case you\'d be barking mad if you didn\'t switch to Intel\'s Core 2 Duo.on page 1, and this: It\'s all well and good comparing one AMD processor with another but anyone contemplating a new CPU should be considering a Core 2 Duo so we plugged a Core 2 Duo E6750 in to a Foxconn G33M-S motherboard with the same memory, hard drive and graphics card. The E6750 runs at 2.67GHz on a 1,333MHz FSB and costs £126 at Overclockers so it is cheaper than the X2 6400+ and nominally it is slower.on page 2. ****************** Can i choose what climate models i run or is it whatever is downloaded Yes. In fact it\'s recommended. Just go to your Account page on the server, and make your choice in the climateprediction.net preferences section. There are brief notes in the left hand section about each model. Note that it REALLY MEANS IT when it says that the HADAM3 models Requires 1.5GB RAM minimum to run. In fact the server won\'t give you one of these high resolution models if your computer doesn\'t have this amount of ram! Also note that there are 2 types of HADCM3 (Coupled Ocean) models: 80 years and 160 years. These are allocated at random, depending on availability of models of each type in the data pool. |

Is there a way to transfer the models for one computer to another? The computer i use to run climate doesn\'t have an internet connection anymore |

This is our alternative discussion board. The second item down contains a set of README files, each containing links to hints, tips, and advice. The README - Running the Model file contains this near the bottom: MOVING a model from one machine to another, which tells how to do this, as well as how to fix some of the problems that may arise from the move. |

cce are the abreviations used to refer to the BBC\'s now closed Climate Change Experiment. This was a project to introduce the British public to climate change, and to climate modelling, as part of it\'s series of tv programs. As I recall, the \"cce\" folder was normally installed as: C:\\program files\\climate change experiment. Unless you were participating in that project, you won\'t have a \"cce\" folder. There are both 3500+\'s in both Socket 939 and Socket AM2. Just do a google search for Athlon64 3500+ AM2 They are all over the place. |

everyone\'s help has been invaluable to getting things set-up. I now have a question about networking. This switch( http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=383560&CatId=2789 ) i am looking to buy to connect three computers to one ethernet connection. But i don\'t see how the ethernet line connects to this switch. Any advice on how to go about this would great. P.S. i would rather remain wired just for the reliability. Thanks again to all who has helped. Jay |

You don\'t need a switch, you need a router. The router connects to your cable or DSL modem, has a hardware firewall associated with it, acts as a switch to network your computers together, and allow access to the internet from all computer on the network. |
