Usually, but as long as you exit from Boinc before shutting down you should be OK. There are some systems where if you shutdown Windows and forget to exit Boinc, it crashes (in particular Vista, see the \'README - crashes and other problems\' post for ways to reduce the chance of this, link in my signature). I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

Not stupid, and a good question for those just starting. You CAN turn off your computer, BUT ... Second, in the Menu of the BOINC manager, click on Exit. Then wait until BOINC shuts down all of the climate program\'s files, and then itself. THEN you can safely shut down Windows and turn off the computer. (Just turning off the computer may result in some of the files still being open, and getting corrupted.) First however, there is a step you can take to minimise the lose of data already calculated. 1) Click on the Tasks tab. 2) Click on the Show graphics button. You\'ll seen a blue overlay on the left. 3) Press Z to remove the overlay. 4) Finally, press 8. This will display a countdown timer. Shortly after the timer goes back to a high number, (it varies, depending on type of model), The program will \"checkpoint\", i.e. save all of the data to the harddisk. (You\'ll see the HD light flicker.) And shortly after this, it will be safe to shut down with minimum loss of time when you restart. I usually wait until the timer starts moving again, after the pause at the \'high number\'. edit Too slow again. Backups: Here |
