I have a problem, again. BOINC didn\'t work properly on my SUSE-linux and didn\'t show the graphics. After a model-crash I decided to reinstall BOINC. Before the reinstall I had a problem with linux (and still have), it doesn\'t want to shut down and I have to switch off the computer by force. Then after 2 such \"shut-downs\" X Window got damaged and I had to install the Graphics-Driver again. After that BOINC-Manager didn\'t work any more: The program \'boincmgr\' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was \'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)\'. (Details: serial 557 error_code 11 request_code 146 minor_code 5) ... Now I still can\'t get BOINC-Manager to work. I have already deleted everything from the BOINC-folder and reinstalled it. BOINC-Manager still shows the same error. What can I do? |

It might be worth reinstalling openSUSE (if that is practical). I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

I better try to fix this problem. I don\'t want to give up yet. |

Doesn\'t anyone have a proposal? |

It sounds like your Linux installation has become damaged, which is why I suggested reinstalling Linux. I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

But why everything works fine except of the shut-down-thing and BOINC-Manager (the boinc-client also works but I don\'t want to run only the command-line BOINC). I also have the feeling that it all started after I installed Google Desktop. I have to try quitting it before shutting down. I will try it right now, brb. OK, it shut down properly, at least it looked like. But the graphics driver got damaged again and I had to install it again. During the installation it tells me: ERROR: File \'usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so\' is not a symbolic link. it links to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.71.86.01 which is in the same folder and then later: Your driver installation has been altered since it was initially installed...will uninstall as best it can...see \'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log\' for details Maybe something is wrong with the installed driver but the installer doesn\'t uninstall the bad file Wow, I just tried to start BOINC-Manager and it works!!! Maybe the uninstaller worked better this time. I have just set everything up and it works. The Graphic is working again, too. But it shows the 3D-Globe although I have selected 2D in the preferences? And the globe doesn\'t seem to be OpenGL-Rendered (turns very slow, about 1 Frame every 3 secound or 1/3 fps when in fullscreen, 2 fps when small). |

Glad that the main problem seems to be resolved now :-) There is a \'use defaults\' setting in the preferences which (I think) needs to be turned off. It\'s best to turn the screensaver off, otherwise the risk of crashes is higher. And the CPU usage can be high, particularly on Linux which doesn\'t have very good graphics drivers. I just typed \"W\" in the Graph and it turned to the 2D-View. I have already turned off the screensaver. I only sometimes look at the graph manually to check if everything is ok (ice-world, weird behavior...) Hopefully the new model works fine (I have already said this a few times before :D ) |

I used to have X Windows shutdown problems on Fedora 7 because the proprietary ATI graphics driver is crap. Upgrading did help, but if I switch from init 5 to init 3, it will not shutdown X. Runlevel 5 or 3 is OK by itself, just not switching between the two. If you have an unstable X system, other processes will have problems. Anyway, I hope you got it figured out. Any more problems, then try an upgrade/reinstall of OS or drivers. |

And I have to install it manually because there\'s no repository for old legacy drivers. But why did it work before and now doesn\'t? I don\'t think there are problems when switching between the runlevels on my system. |

well, I have a very old graphics card and there\'s only one driver which works for me. And I have to install it manually because there\'s no repository for old legacy drivers. Now, I just realized what you\'re up to. Correct me if I\'m wrong. You\'re trying to run an old NVIDIA based video card with the 71.86 drivers. I thought the oldest version for the \"unsupported\" video cards was 71.74....Chances are the NVidia installer is having something run on bootup /etc/init.d/nvidia which may be disabling the driver. Make sure this never runs on bootup, as it will alter your xorg.conf file. It may be undoing your work. Unfortunately, the newer linux distros do not support the older drivers very well. You may be better off with an older linux. |

Yes I\'m running the 71.86 driver on a GeForce2 GTS which is supported. I think the driver is working fine. There\'s no nvidia in /etc/init.d/. OpenGL is working, too (glxgears at ~1900 fps and 3D-Games). Thanks anyway for the comment. |

Sounds like that last uninstall/reinstall did the trick. Nvidia makes a better installer than ATI, but neither are perfect. Anyway, as long as it\'s working for you, carry on. :) |

BOINC can be run with or without X-window in SUSE 10.3. I do it all the time. From a X-term or GNOME terminal, you can run a \'shutdown -H now\' when x-windows stops, do a \'ps -aux | grep boinc\' and see if you have 2 tasks, one for the grep and one for boinc. That isolates the problem to the x-windows. Reboot then try to run boinc from x-term. \'cd /root/BOINC\' or whatever directory boinc is located \'./boinc\' or better \'./boincmgr\' thats dot-forward-slash - boinc is not a shell program. I have a problem, again. |

Try to shutdown linux manually \'shutdown -h now\' from a shell (GNOME or x-term) Make sure you have closed the client. It\'s not harder to shutdown this way. |
